As a bit of prep for my upcoming book release on Bryce Canyon National Park, amazingly enough not only is it the parkâs 100th Anniversary but we were lucky enough to have the annular eclipse pass over as well! I made my 6th journey to Bryce, after a brief Fall foliage tour in Crested Butte. I researched the location in hopes of capturing not only a closeup of the eclipse, but an interesting composition with Thorâs Hammer.
I slept in the park in this perfect spot, packed up at 4:25 AM and hiked down to my chosen spot. Totality occurred at 10:29:03 AM MT with an approximate totality between 90-92%. Unfortunately, some clouds swept in during the key moments and ruined the wider composition opportunities, but I still captured many closeups of the eclipse! I am not sure of how many people attended, but the rangers predicted near 30,000! I met many nice new folks, spent the early morning hours talking and shooting, and enjoyed talking with hikers and other photography enthusiasts who had many questions about how to capture the eclipse. What a great experience!

I call this incredible feature the Desert Hello Mitten as it appears to rise from the desert floor to wave and say hello. I spent many a day, evening and night at this location waiting for the perfect set (traffic from Arches National Park Road presents many light pollution issues) and this evening I got quite a few that work well. Desert Mitten seen here in late Spring saying hello to a canopy of stars and if you look closely, a few shooting stars as well!!

Spring showers bring Spring flowers â and sometimes you have to stop to smell them!! I named this amazing bison Ferdinand, after a favorite childhood book âFerdinand the Bullâ and its wonderful bull, who knew the pleasure of the simple things in life: smelling the flowers without a care in the world and enjoying the peace of nature rather than the fight and conflict. With the major snows and endless rainstorm and moisture, I am betting this yearâs wildflower season will be fairly epic! Canât wait to see them and pics coming soon!

The sun bursts through the South Window at sunrise in Spring and a Utah Juniper drinks in the early morning light! I spent many a morning watching the sun move into position for this composition, but this was one of the most colorful, vibrant and happy for sure!
The South Window formed within a fin of Slick Rock Member sandstone. The South Window is 105 feet (32 m) wide and 66 feet (20.1 m) tall. Due to the South Windowâs location, situated facing nearly due east, this arch offers a perfect location for viewing the rising sun through the window.

Double Arch and its incredible, unique double span under a canopy of stars in late Summer. I spent several evenings here waiting for the right conditions and this evening did not disappoint.
Double Arch is a unique, close-set pair of arches within The Windows section but a feature of Elephant Butte. The southeast arch is 160 feet (48.8 m) wide and 105 feet (32 m) tall and is the second largest arch in the park. The smaller west arch is only 67 feet (20.4 m) wide and 86 feet (26.2) high. Double Arch has the tallest opening of any arch in the park where its southern span rises 112 feet (34 m) above the desert floor. Double Arch is the third widest (longest) arch in the park at 144 feet (44m) across. Double Arch formed as a pothole arch from erosion above burrowing down into the rock. Double Arch was used as the backdrop for the opening scene to the movie âIndiana Jones and the Last Crusadeâ but the cave shown in the movie does not exist.

Almost 2 years to the day, and as the edge of season winds down for 2022, here was an incredible morning after sunrise and a late Spring snowfall in Glacier National Park 2021 as a snowy fog rolled in to cover the foothills of Never Laughs Mountain (seen to the left) and Painted Teepee! With another snowfall here in Denver, the edge of season fun time and a bit more of Winter continues. In that theme, here is one from the edge of season in Glacier: Curly Bear Mountain fluffy with a recent dusting of snow seen from Going to the Sun Road near Rising Sun in late Spring.

Twinkling Turret (Turret Arch || Arches National Park, Utah)
What do you see when you look at this arch? By far my favorite arch within Arches National Park is Turret Archâseen here under a canopy of twinkling stars, soft wispy clouds, and the late Summerâs warm air. I spent many nights at this location capturing various compositions of Turret Arch for sunrise, sunset, under the stars and even with the Milky Way aligned through its mouth (stay tuned there). Many people see many different things in this rock formation from a castle and turret of course to a goblin. I see the face and mouth of the character from Edvard Munchâs âThe Scream.â

Last Light (Ho**er Lake || Mount Cook, New Zealand)
As Winter continues here in Denver with a bit more snow today, I did some reminiscing over my time in New Zealand, seen here: Last light shines upon Mount Cook (Aoraki) and over Ho**er Lake in late Spring as ice bergs make their way along a thawing Ho**er River. I enjoyed the 10km (6.2 miles, out and back) Ho**er Valley Track hike for its serenity and breathtaking views along the Ho**er River. I spent many afternoons and evenings waiting for the perfect light at this spot and lucked into this moment. While strong winds removed reflection possibilities, the aqua colors of the glacial flour shimmering on the partially frozen lake mesmerized me. The eerie sounds of crackling ice and snow falls from mini avalanches echoing across the lake reminded me of the power of nature.
