Listen To Your Gut
Your body communicates to you in whispers.
If you don’t hear it, it will communicate in shouts.
Shouts usually come in the form of pain, fatigue, or imbalance.
If you don’t understand what its saying, it will scream in the form of illness or dis-ease.
The language of your body is not as direct as the language we speak.
It is much more subtle and cryptic.
Everyone’s body has a unique language so you must learn how to decode yours for yourself.
Learning how to translate the subtle language of your body into a language you can understand and effectively respond to is an invaluable tool.

There’s a saying in the ancient Ayurvedic texts that warns against “prajnaparadha” which essentially translates to mean “crimes against your body’s wisdom.”
We commit these crimes against ourselves all the time when we don’t listen to our gut and act in alignment with what our body needs.
I spent years of my life regularly practicing “prajnaparadha” when I was pushing my body to the limits, training for triathlons, working 2 jobs, eating on the go, and never giving myself a rest. Finally, my body broke down into extreme exhaustion and my digestion halted. I couldn’t eat anything without having severe, painful reactions to foods.
Luckily, I learned how to press the reset button on my body and heal deeply.
The very first step I took was to heal my gut and my digestion.
I tried so many protocols and restrictive diets but none of them worked or lasted.
Finally, I dove deeply into the wisdom of Ayurveda and started to understand the energetics of food, what my unique body and gut type really needed, and how to gently cleanse my body so the results would last.
Now I can joyfully eat all the foods that I love! And I don’t get a painful reaction if I eat food that used to be on my “no” list.

If you have acid reflux or any type of ulcerations in your GI tract, this recipe can help soothe and heal your gut. But I am SO grateful to now experience food freedom and a nourishing relationship with nutrition thanks to the wisdom of Ayurveda.
In 2016 I interviewed the legendary Dr. John Douillard on this topic for an online healing event I produced called the Soul of Healing Summit.
Dr. John Douillard is the author of the controversial but enlightening book "Eat Wheat" and is a renowned Ayurvedic Practitioner who used to run Deepak Chopra's Ayurveda clinic but now runs his own thriving Ayurvedic healing center, LifeSpa, out of Boulder, Colorado.
In our interview he breaks down the science behind the ancient healing tradition of Ayurveda in relationship to gut health, gluten intolerances, digestive imbalances....why restrictive diets are NOT the answer to healing the gut,.and how you can reclaim your digestive power and be able to eat hard to digest foods once again.

Do you like it as a Plate or as a Salad better? Here’s one example of a simple gut happy meal. Baby greens lightly massaged with a squeeze of lime and herb salt, then drizzled with tahini and olive oil topped with raw shredded beets and carrots. Steamed yams, sprouted black quinoa cooked in veggie broth, saucy black beans (soaked and pressure cooked with 1 orange, garam masala and mint and coconut oil), dressing in the center is avocado tahini lime and cilantro blended with some veggie broth and salt.

Green Smoothie Chia Porridge Topped with Cardamom Rose Apples + Pomegranate Seeds
🎄Green Smoothie
Your favorite frozen fruit blended with hot herbal tea (Tulsi Sweet Rose is my favorite), avocado, unrefined coconut oil, vegan protein powder and green juice powder (I like Organifi for both). I also added some cardamom powder, maca powder, spirulina. The hot tea helps balance out the frozen fruit and make it easier to digest. You can use yogi ginger tea to further enhance the digestibility and flavor.
🎄Soak chia seeds in hot water or tea until fully hydrated then mix with smoothie.
🎄Peel and grate a large apple, squeeze some lime juice over it, sprinkle some cardamom powder and “massage” in with your fingers. This will help enhance the digestibility of the raw apple while preserving enzymes.
🎄Top with fresh Pomegranate seeds and enjoy! This is a delightful breakfast that is light, energizing and Ayurvedically balanced

[Recipe] Evening Elixir for Sound Sleep
This simple elixir is great for calming the nervous system, inducing sound sleep and also helps your body naturally eliminate each morning.
It’s so important to your gut health and your mental well-being, to clear the colon out first thing every morning.
If you’re not able to have a full bowel movement and make space for new food coming in, the gut lining starts getting irritated and inflamed, you start having trouble digesting foods and absorbing nutrients, your brain gets foggy, muscles get achy, tight and sore and your overall energy levels plummet.
Not the scenario you want to find yourself in!
This nightly tonic helps support both the mind and the body.

Cardamom Golden Milk Recipe
Ingredients:
8-12 ounces of full-fat milk*
1 tsp turmeric powder
⅛ tsp cardamom powder
1 tsp ghee* (vegan - use coconut oil)
100% pure maple syrup or coconut sugar to taste
Directions:
Pour milk into a small pot on the stove.
Add powdered spices.
Turn up the heat to medium-high and stir regularly to prevent sticking.
Heat almost to a boil.
Before it boils, take off the heat.
Pour into a mug and add ghee (or coconut oil) and maple syrup.
Sip and savor this elixir by candlelight as you are winding down for bed.

This recipe is so nourishing and delicious!
The cardamom and turmeric help increase the overall digestibility of dairy.
Cardamom is also a digestive tonic...
..it reduces gas, spasms, balances stomach acid levels and is known in Ayurveda for its ability to stimulate the mind and heart and give clarity and joy.
Turmeric is most well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties, but did you know it also boosts the immune system, purifies the blood, promotes healthy intestinal flora and makes your skin glow?
The combination of ghee and a little bit of mineral-rich maple syrup also help soothe and relax the nervous system and help the body better assimilate the benefits of the herbs.

*A note on milk:
Many people rule out dairy altogether because of how adulterated the industry has become.
It’s true that ultra-pasteurized and homogenized milk is very toxic to the system not to mention the potentized toxins that build up from the low quality, pesticide, hormone and chemical-laden food that dairy cows are fed.
The list of atrocities goes on and on...
But if you can find a local farm that takes good care of their animals and feeds them high-quality organic food and they have space to graze on green growing grass, then their milk is a tonic for the entire body and has been known in Ayurveda for thousands of years to potentize the effects of herbs and deliver them deep into the bodily tissues and cells where they are most needed.
That being said, everything is on a spectrum and if you can’t find that type of whole raw milk, here are a few other options that can still be supportive.
Some milk options for vegetarians/omnivores and vegans:
- Full fat, cream on top (non-homogenized) organic raw whole milk (unpasteurized) is best
If you can’t find that locally, here are some other dairy options:
- Full fat, cream on top (non-homogenized) Organic Whole Milk (vat pasteurized) is next best
- Organic Whole Milk, non-homogenized, Organic Whole Milk, Organic Goat’s Milk are also options
Try to avoid ultra-pasteurized milk, vat pasteurized is heated at lower temperatures in smaller batches so preserves some more of the healthy enzymes in the milk
Vegan Non-Dairy Alternative:
- Full fat organic coconut milk (no additives, BPA free can)

The timing is important here.
Make sure you are eating dinner early (around sunset) and enjoying this evening tonic on an empty stomach right before bed.
You want to be at least two hours post-meal on an empty stomach to enjoy this tonic otherwise you’ll be bogging down your gut instead of giving it a boost!

Also, before making the dairy recipe make sure you look at your tongue in the mirror!
If there’s a white coating, you’ll want to skip this recipe and take Triphala before bed with warm water instead of this milk elixir.
This recipe is NOT for you if you see a white coating, especially towards the back of the tongue.
This indicates that there are toxins built up in the colon and your GI tract needs some support in clearing those toxins before consuming a tonic like this recipe.
This recipe is best for you if you tend to have dry bowels, dry skin, are undernourished, losing weight when you don’t want to be, if you’re a light sleeper or feel easily stimulated in your nervous system (such as very sensitive to light, sound, or have a hyperactive mind).
