What a great time at today’s Lowcountry Fish & Grits Music Festival brings awareness to the rich Gullah Geechee culture and its connection to the African diaspora by showcasing great musical talent and local cuisine.
Honored to share with you, my recent painted portrait of friend and mentor Thomas Curtis Barnwell, Jr., he’s a Hilton Head Island, native. Born in 1935, and is a fourth generation islander. He is one of the Gullah elders on Hilton head Island, and has done tremendous things throughout the Gullah Geechee, cultural heritage corridor this painting is on view at the culture HHI arts gallery at Townhall Hilton head Island.
The natural duality in the Meta season. Currently on view at the Gibbes, Museum of Art in Charleston sharing my artist statement about the work. In this body of work, I have chosen to focus on the meta-verse as a central theme. The term "verse" itself implies a turning, a movement that originates from the Latin word vertere, meaning to turn. In a cosmological sense, the Universe can be seen as a continuous and interconnected turning of diverse elements working harmoniously as one. Drawing inspiration from this idea, I aim to capture the essence of this working as-one through my art.
As an artist, I explore a range of elements and techniques in my compositions to convey my artistic vision. I employ different iconography within my work, allowing viewers to engage with the deeper meanings and symbolisms embedded in each piece. Drips, for instance, symbolize the passage of time, while also serving as a representation of the renewal brought about by water and rain. Layered figures and dancing motifs symbolize the celebration and rejoicing of cultures, highlighting our ever-growing understanding and appreciation of unique traditions.
Silhouettes within my artwork face towards the future, their gaze also simultaneously looking back upon the past. This duality represents our connection to both our roots and the endless possibilities that lie ahead. By utilizing figure-ground color spectrums, I aim to showcase the vibrant and diverse world that surrounds us, inviting viewers to contemplate their own place within it.
It gives me great pleasure to announce my exhibition at the renowned Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston, South Carolina, I will be showcasing a captivating collection of new paintings and assemblages that I created for this exhibition. Looking forward to welcoming you to this and sharing my art with all of you! The exhibition runs through September 30, 2023
The Gibbes Museum of Art will be closed today June 19 in honor of Juneteenth.
This work is a tribute shared by former Gibbes Visiting artist Amiri Farris .
Farris says that this work carries “[a] message of unity, self-improvement, and mutual respect, inspiring us toward a brighter future together.”
Deriving its name from combining June and nineteenth, Juneteenth is celebrated on the anniversary of the order by Major General Gordon Granger proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas on June 19, 1865.
This artwork serves as a tribute to Juneteenth, one of the oldest and most important celebrations in American history. It marks the end of slavery in the United States and celebrates freedom and progress for all Americans. The message of unity, self-improvement, and mutual respect is central to this piece, inspiring us toward a brighter future together. ❤️🖤💚💛
