Passiflora caerulea L., al igual que otras especies de la familia Passifloraceae, es utilizada en la medicina popular por sus propiedades antiespasmódicas y para el tratamiento de la ansiedad, el insomnio y el nerviosismo.

Las partes aéreas poseen alcaloides como pasiflorina, harmano, harmina, harmalol y harmalina (Mandrile y Bongiorno de Pfirter, 1991), derivados de la Β-carbolina, de efecto sedativo, que tratan la tensión nerviosa y el insomnio. También contienen flavonoides: crisina, vitexina, orientina, isovitexina, isoorientina, saponarina, siendo el primero el principal responsable del efecto sedativo (Wolfman et al., 1994; Paladini, 1996) y anticonvulsivante (Medina et al., 1990; Dhawan et al., 2004; Pereira et al., 2004).

👉 Las β-carbolinas (harmina, harmalina, tetrahidroharmina) son inhibidoras de la enzima monoaminooxidasa

👉 Los inhibidores no selectivos de la enzima monoaminooxidasa, conocidos habitualmente por las siglas “IMAO”, son la primera clase de fármacos que fue utilizada para el tratamiento de la depresión. Los IMAO ejercen un efecto agonista en los neurotransmisores monoaminérgicos, los más importantes de los cuales son la dopamina, la adrenalina, la noradrenalina y la serotonina.
La enzima monoaminooxidasa se localiza en los botones terminales de los axones de las neuronas monoaminérgicas. Su función consiste en eliminar los neurotransmisores de este tipo para evitar que se acumulen en exceso. Los IMAO reducen la actividad de esta enzima, y en consecuencia aumentan los niveles de monoaminas.

👉 Por ello, una vez más, se recomienda NO EMPLEAR JUNTOS (en simultáneo) fármacos IMAO y plantas como ésta, por las interacciones entre ellos que pueden potenciar sus efectos, con consecuencias no deseadas. Tampoco se recomienda su empleo en simultáneo con las benzodiazepinas, por su interacción.
