What are we looking for in a student regent? NMSU answers are instructive:
As for the new student regent, [university president] Carruthers said he is looking for someone who is dedicated to the university and wants to participate as a regular regent.
"We call them the student regent, but I want somebody who is mature enough to be a regent," he said. "Just because they're still a student, they have the same authority as any of the other four regents and I want them to exercise that."
Student regent applicants are first interviewed and approved by a selection committee including the Associated Students of NMSU president and a student representative appointed by the dean of every college. The student body president then sends a list of about five recommendations to the university president for his review before three final candidates are sent to the governor for her consideration.
ASNMSU President Wesley Jackson said the interviews for the student regent have been completed and a list will be sent to Carruthers in the next couple of weeks.
"Someone who is going to be student regent should be focused and student-driven," Jackson said. "Someone with strong character and strong leadership skills is what we re looking for."
