BALLET CLASS FRANKNESS

I’m going to be honest with you about what I see in my classroom. It is my responsibility to express reality with my students in a productive, humane, and supportive manner.

As a student, it is your responsibility to make a decision about what to do with critiques and corrections—from me and all of your teachers. You have the option to tell yourself that I either don’t like you, am picking on you, or don’t know what I am talking about. That’s one way to go.

Or you can take a frank assessment of yourself in the moment and think about what you can undertake in your dance efforts to make sure you no longer hear that correction.

The truth is that my goal is to address with you what you need to do in order to evolve into the most masterful dancer you can become.

AESCB ALUMNI SERIES:
Rianne Correa, Batch 2018

“Looking back at the thirteen years of my life dedicated to the art of dance, one can proudly say that it was love that made me keep coming back to it.

Thousands of hours spent for training, months preparing for competitions, and years trying to perfect the movement - all of these are products of love. I was first introduced to ballet when I saw how my sister enjoyed it so much. As a kid, I just wanted to pass the time, but soon enough, that child began to develop a sense of belongingness which then led to a lifelong passion. It provided an avenue where not only I can productively exert my energy, but it also gave me a place where I can express myself and be comfortable in my own skin.

What started out as a childhood dream became an instant obligation. I would be lying if I said that ballet was easy for me at first. I experienced different kinds of falls and injuries yet I kept going. That is the number one lesson I learned from dancing, and I applied it in whatever aspect of my life from then on. I learned how to physically, mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually prepare myself for everyday challenges. I learned how to handle any situation with grace and the right temperament. The art of dance taught me how to sacrifice and prioritize. I learned how to manage my time well to make sure that I was able to improve my craft but also have ample time to enjoy with my family and friends. This attitude was of course a big help to my academics. It enhanced my focus, interpersonal skills, and even my drive to accomplish tasks way before the deadlines.

The people who I met along the way honed this definition of love. My mentors motivated me to create goals for myself and achieve them through hard work, dedication, and most importantly, discipline. They treated us like their own and made sure we were doing great in the other aspects of our daily lives. We went to them whenever we needed someone to listen to our problems in school or at home. They genuinely cared for us as we progressed into the world of dancing. I am also beyond grateful for my ballet classmates, the people I have found the feeling of true friendship. Our bond got stronger every time we achieved new goals or surpassed heavy obstacles. These people, alongside my family, gave so much meaning in my celebrations of success and so much support even during my failures.

I would not be who I am today if I had not chosen to pursue dancing. As the years passed by, I realized that my love for the art was cultivated to the point where I also grew in touch with myself, my religion, my family, friends, and mentors. This love provides me the self-confidence I need while also keeping me grounded. This genuine love for dance is why I would keep choosing to do it in any chance I’ll get, without any hesitation, without fear.”

WHAT CAN I DO AS A DANCE MOM TO SUPPORT MY CHILD?

The answer to that is: don't get too involved. Yes, I know, you might find it hard to believe, but do not get too involved in your dancer’s career. Let them learn and grow on their own! Trust that their teacher knows what they’re doing—they have a plan for each child. In dance, children will not progress the same way. It is not like academic school where they move up together and graduate together.

Each dancer's journey is unique, and it's important for them to experience the process at their own pace. Encourage your child to communicate openly with their teacher and to take responsibility for their own progress. This will help them develop independence and resilience.

Avoid being competitive with other students or their parents. Every child has their own strengths and areas for growth, and comparisons can be detrimental to their self-esteem and enjoyment of dance. Focus on your child’s individual progress and celebrate their unique achievements.

When dropping your child off at the studio, it's best to leave and allow them to engage fully with their class. Lingering can create unnecessary pressure and distraction. Trust that they are in good hands and that the dance studio is a space where they can grow both as dancers and individuals.

Remember, the goal of dance education is not just to create technically proficient dancers, but to nurture a love for the art form and to build life skills such as discipline, perseverance, and confidence. By stepping back and allowing your child to navigate their own path, you are giving them the space to truly grow and flourish.

Stay supportive and positive, attend their performances, and celebrate their achievements, no matter how big or small. Your role is to be their biggest cheerleader, providing a safe and encouraging environment for them to explore their passion for dance. Trust in the process and enjoy watching your dancer’s journey unfold.

So, don’t get too involved and competitive. Be humble and kind. Show your child that success is not measured by how they compare to others, but by their own personal growth and joy in what they do. Teach them to appreciate their peers’ successes and to support one another in their artistic endeavors. This mindset will foster a healthy and positive environment, not just in the dance studio, but in all aspects of life. By being humble and kind, you’ll be setting a powerful example for your child to follow, helping them to become not only a better dancer but a better person.

HUMILITY ALWAYS WINS

No matter what your rank is as a ballerina or how many awards you’ve won stay humble. In life, no one will care about who you are, where you’re from or the awards you have. If you are hard to work with, you will not succeed. Dance has its life lessons our teachers teach us and being humble is one of them. Regardless of who you are, either a principal dancer or an executive of a company - stay humble. Remember that titles are not important in the real world.

Don't miss classes or rehearsals. The obvious thing that happens is you do not move forward in your training when you miss class. BUT - there are several other things that happen too! The dancers around you move forward, they learn skills, clean lines, memorize choreography, polish details- it is selfish to expect them to repeat all of this for you when you return. Learning complicated corps de ballet choreography is VERY difficult when people are missing. Pet peeve of all instructors is hearing I signed up for ___ and it is at the same time as this rehearsal so I'll have to leave early or miss. You cannot be in 2 places at once so don't sign up to be!

Performance: It is so important dancers are exposed to performance and the theater. Learning how to prepare and perform is part of the training in classical ballet. The confidence built from being on stage will carry to other parts of their lives. Learning to make quick decisions when something doesn't go quite right is part of live arts performance and builds great character. Make your performance experiences fun for the students. They have done all they can do up to this point- now let them enjoy the magic of the theater!

What’s in my dance bag?

Your dance bag should contain all the things needed for dance and a few extra items just in case of an emergency. Beginner dancers might not need to bring as much items than the advanced dancers. Take a look at what you should have in your dance bag.

1. SHOES: Depending on your dance style, you might need ballet shoes, pointe, jazz shoes, tap shoes, etc. It's good to have them in your bag, especially if you have multiple classes in a day. Bring all the shoes you need. Not having your pointe shoes or toe pads for your pointe class is a big disappointment to teachers. Make sure your shoes are all in your bag.

2. EXTRA TIGHTS AND LEOTARDS: Accidents happen and every dancer has to be prepared for anything! You may spill a drink on your tights, have an accident in the bathroom or maybe you start your red day. One pair of tights and leotards will never be enough! Always have extra! Besides, tights and leotards get worn out easily if you only wear 1 pair. If you take classes 5-6 times a week, at least have 3 leotards to change in. Having worn out tights and leotards are a BIG NO! You always have to look presentable, clean, and decent during class. If you are a dancer with only two pairs of tights and one set of leotards, I pity you. I used to have around 50 or more pairs of leotards and tights. That’s just how ballet is! Always have a back up pair in case of runs, tear, stains and excessive sweating!

3. HAIR PRODUCTS: Always have a hair brush/comb, hair ties, hair spray or gel and a million bobby pins! Dancers usually come to class with their hair in a bun already but you need to make sure that you have your hair products just in case you need to fix your bun or it gets messy during class.

4. TOWEL: No matter how cold your studio is; dancers sweat! You always need to have a small towel in your bag. You don’t want to be the dancer who is excessively sweating and is smelly in the dance studio. Be sure to wipe all the perspiration after class and after rehearsals.

5. EXTRA CLOTHES: Always have extra underwear for any kind of accidents. An extra shirt and shorts. Most dancers come to the studio in their overalls and leave wearing overalls but be sure you have an extra shirt - the studio might be too cold or you need to go somewhere so bring extra clothes.

6. DEODORANT AND PERFUME: Dancers sweat a lot! This is essential for every dancer. We always need to smell fresh even after a long and tiring day!

7. WARM UPS: Booties, skirts, warmers, overalls. You need your muscles to be completely warm during your breaks. If you are on a break, stretch with your booties and warmers on. Warm ups aren’t just props - they are worn for a reason. It helps keep your muscles warm and ready for class.

8. FIRST AID KID: Always have a few blister bandages, or band aids in your bag. You never know what would happen. You scrape your knee on the floor or get some floor burns. Sometimes after pointe, you’ll have blisters and bleeding toes. You need to be prepared for this.

9. FEMININE SUPPLIES: This is a must for older dancers. You always need to be prepared for what’s to come. You should know what you need and it should always be inside your dance bag.

10. SEWING KIT: Dancers who are on pointe need to have their own sewing kit in their bags. You have to know how to sew pointe shoes! Sometimes ribbons come off and you need to quickly sew them back on before class or rehearsals. Be prepared!

11. DANCE ACCESSORIES: Flexibility bands, turn boards, foot stretchers, rollers, lacrosse balls, knee pads, ankle braces etc. Bring them in your bag. Once your body is warm and stretched, you may use your flexibility bands to stretch your muscles further. You may also use your turn board to practice turns while waiting for your class. These are bought for a reason! It is not meant to stay in your bag.

12. NOTEBOOK AND PEN: Sometimes writing notes and corrections after a long day is helpful to dancers. Unless you have a really great memory and can remember all the corrections without having to write them down then you might need to bring a notebook to jot them down.

13. PROPS: Most advanced dancers will be required to bring props for rehearsals. It may be a prop for your contemporary dance, a tambourine, a fan or a practice tutu for your classical rehearsal. Make sure to bring all of the necessary things you will be using during rehearsals. Rehearsing with a prop helps you be more comfortable with moving with it. Don’t waste time rehearsing without your prop!

14. WATER BOTTLE: You may be dancing 4-8 hours a day - sometimes even more. It is important to stay hydrated!

15. HEALTHY SNACK: Some days you are at the studio from 8 in the morning until 9 or 10 in the evening. Always bring a healthy snack! A protein bar, nuts, a salad or some freshly sliced fruits should help you get through the day. Make sure you have eaten your breakfast or lunch before you go to your dance class. You don’t want your dancing to suffer because you feel sick. It isn’t healthy to skip meals! Eat but be sure to eat healthy.

Make sure you pack your dance bag the night before your class. It’s not your mom’s job to pack it for you - she’s not the one dancing and she doesn’t know what you truly need for class. Remember, dancers are trained to be prepared for anything! Always have extra items in your bag. You wouldn’t want to be the kid who forgot her tights in class. Some studios won’t even let you attend your class if you aren’t wearing the proper attire.

Have you ever wondered why your teacher is so pressed about you having the right size of shoes? Ballet shoes, including pointe shoes and soft ballet slippers, need to be tight for several reasons:

1. Support: Tight-fitting ballet shoes provide support to the feet and ankles, helping to stabilize the dancer's movements and reduce the risk of injury. The snug fit helps to keep the foot securely in place within the shoe, allowing for better control and alignment during dance movements.

2. Flexibility: Tight ballet shoes allow the dancer to articulate and point their feet with precision and control. The close fit of the shoe ensures that the foot moves as one with the shoe, enabling the dancer to execute intricate footwork and movements with ease.

3. Aesthetics: Ballet shoes are designed to enhance the line and shape of the foot, creating a beautiful visual effect when the dancer is on stage. A snug fit helps to accentuate the arch of the foot and create a clean, elongated line from the ankle to the toes.

4. Technique: Properly fitted ballet shoes help the dancer feel the floor and maintain a strong connection to the ground, allowing for better balance and stability. The tightness of the shoe enables the dancer to feel and control their movements more effectively, enhancing their overall technique and performance.

Overall, the tight fit of ballet shoes is essential for dancers to achieve the necessary support, flexibility, aesthetics, and technique required in ballet performance. It is important for dancers to find the right size and fit of ballet shoes to ensure their comfort and safety while dancing.
