On the evening of 1/27/24, the Bethpage Fire Department was alerted for an unknown substance leaking from a compressor at the Town of Oyster Bay ice rink on Stewart Ave. This call grew to a full scale hazmat incident. Multiple resources from across Nassau County converged on the scene and the substance was determined to be anhydrous ammonia.
Hazmat teams from Nassau County Fire Marshals, Nassau County Police and the Hicksville Fire department, as well as numerous other FD’s, and the Office of Emergency Management also responded to the scene.
Hazmat technicians donned isolation suits and entered the building, stopped the leak, and worked to ventilate the large structure. Once they exited, members were decontaminated. Occupants of the facility were checked out by paramedics and there were no reported injuries. All units were under the command of BFD Chief of Department DeBobes Jr (Car 1).

At 08:59 this morning, the Syosset Fire Department was alerted for a high angle rescue at 66 Stillwell Lane in Woodbury. The roof of a building under construction collapsed, trapping one worker and injuring a second. The injured worker was extricated and transported by SFD to a local hospital. The pinned worker was pronounced deceased on scene by a Nassau County Police Medic.
Due to the nature of the incident, Bethpage FD’s Technical Rescue Team was mutual aided to the scene.
Agencies on scene included Syosset FD, Bethpage FD, Oyster Bay Cove PD, Nassau County PD, NCPD Emergency Ambulance Bureau, NCPD Emergency Service Unit, Nassau County Fire Marshals, Town of Oyster Bay Public Safety, and TOB Buildings Dept.

Late Friday night, the Syosset Fire Department responded to a reported MVA with overturn on the Northern State Parkway. Upon arrival, Medic 5896 advised dispatch that there were 3 occupants trapped in the car, which was on its side.
One of the occupants was able to self extricate with the medic’s assistance, and the crew of Squad 588 was able to quickly extricate the other two upon their arrival (which was the new rig’s first pin job).
All three occupants were transported to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Other agencies on scene include Plainview FD, NYSP, NCPD, NCPD EAB, and NCPD ESU.
On Monday April 10th, the Plainview Fire Dept operated on scene of a stubborn trash compactor fire. After working to remove the trash by hand for a while, Chief Cohen (9503) called for a heavy wrecker to respond and lift the compactor to have gravity help their operation.
In addition to hand lines, firefighters used both a piercing nozzle and a ground monitor to put water onto the fire that would simply not go out.
Other agencies, such as Nassau County OEM, were requested to the scene to determine what “outside the box” resources would be available to help extinguish the fire.

The plane burst into flames on impact and black smoke could be seen billowing from the scene.
There were 3 souls on board the small aircraft. 1 person was pronounced deceased on scene, while the others were airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital by SCPD Aviation with critical injuries. Nobody on the ground was injured.

Yesterday was a busy day for Syosset FD. 2 bad accidents in the span of 8 hours.
At 13:48, they were alerted for a reported overturn into a pole at S Oyster Bay Rd and Hicks Ave. Responding units were advised that there were now multiple calls reporting a patient trapped.
Units arrived and confirmed that the occupant was heavily pinned inside. The van was on its side wedged between a utility pole and a fence, creating a difficult situation for the firefighters.
Mutual aid was requested from Hicksville and Bethpage FD’s for their heavy rescues, but were returned before arriving.
The patient was transported by ground to a local trauma center with unknown injuries.
Then, at 21:51, SFD was alerted to a reported overturn with pin at 142 Cold Spring Rd. Responding units were initially unable to find the accident, but quickly located the vehicle on its side up against a house off the roadway. The vehicle left the roadway, and went airborne at least 10 feet in the air, before landing next to the house. Amazingly, both occupants were uninjured and able to self extricate prior to FD arrival.
One year ago today, I woke up to the sound of screaming over the radio. Something about a bridge collapse. This was a scene of a much different proportion than I had ever been to. A large bridge over a ravine in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park had completely collapsed!
Amazingly, there were only a few minor injuries. An off duty Pittsburgh paramedic heard the call unfold on his radio while driving into work and heard that they were having trouble evacuating one of the patients. He then drove his pickup down into the ravine and loaded the patient on a backboard into the bed of his truck, along with another patient in the cab, and brought them up to waiting ambulances.
Over the 13 hours I was on scene, it was incredible to see the vast amount of resources that responded. These resources spanned from the city to the federal level!
At the end of the day, an amazing job was done by every single one of the responders. Special resources, such as MCI and technical rescue units, were called to the scene immediately, then USAR crews to check for additional patients under the rubble. Everyone worked well together as one team with one goal.
