Historic Landscape exhibition opens at Black Art in America Gallery in Atlanta

I am honored to have my work featured in the Landscapes for Richard Mayhew exhibition, celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Mayhew’s Birth. Fully embracing his medium, over a dozen prominent African American artists will honor the legacy of Richard Mayhew through landscape painting. Paying homage to Richard Mayhew’s extraordinary career—this group of contemporary artists will present profoundly intimate works inspired by his philosophies and creative sensibility. Thank you, Black Art in America, for the opportunity to share my work with your audience. The exhibition continues through May 4th.

New Artwork at the New Dayton Metro Library Huber Heights Branch

Thank you, Dayton Metro Library and the Dayton Art Institute, for this amazing honor. In partnership with the Dayton Art Institute, the Dayton Metro Library has commissioned visual artists to create artwork appropriated from pieces within the Institute's permanent collection. Inspired by the romantic nature scene of “Growing Flowers” by American painter, Mary Pierce, and the hard geometric vibrant colored Antelope Head Puppet from the Bozo people of West Africa, my painting, “Parade,” vividly celebrates the joy of discovery. Every time viewers return to the 6 x 60-foot canvas, I want them to be drawn into it and find something new. Like the layers of leaves that are evenly balanced with the atmospheric sunrise of Pierce's work, I am creating an expansive all-over compositional climax that references the natural world and pulls the viewer in. The patterns of contrasting shifts in color appropriated from Bozo people of Mali create a rhythm of continuous movement that motivates and inspires. As the forms interweave and interact with each other to create a greater whole, this painting echoes the library’s vision of elevating community.

(First slide on the left)
Mindful Joy, 36 x 72

“Mindful Joy”, is a spiritual testimony to the visual experiences that arouse my senses. As I examine and interpret the world around me, I seek to share an exquisite interplay of subtle and bold, thus combining my interests in the musical composition and its relationship to my visual world. My intention was to create a kind of architectonic lyricism where forms that relate to stringed instruments interweave together in my pictorial arena.

(Second slide on the right)
“Abiyoyo and Bantu Culture” 30 x 40 inches

“Abiyoyo and Bantu Culture”, is a painting commissioned by the Children’s Theater of Cincinnati, which became the scenic backdrop for the play Abiyoyo. The story is based on a South African folktale about a giant named Abiyoyo who was an oppressive force, and a father and son who went on an amazing journey. The son, who is a skilled guitar player and the father who is a mischievous magician work together using their talents in defeating the giant. The painting features the characters from the story along with symbols and images that depict Bantu Culture.
