Tip Tuesday! "Back to school" time has arrived. Make sure your smile is clean and healthy by following these tips! 📓😁

Brush your teeth along your gumline in a circular motion using a toothpaste that contains fluoride 2 times a day for 2 minutes. 🪥✌🏼

Floss daily at bedtime. Flossing allows you to remove plaque or food between your teeth that your toothbrush may not reach. When using string floss, create a "C" shape and hug each tooth with the floss to make sure all surfaces are clean. 🦷🧼

Brush your tongue! This will eliminate unwanted bacteria and help with bad breath. 👅🚫

Eat a healthy diet! Limit your sweets and eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, protein, and grains. 🥦🥒🥕🥩

Limit sugary and/or acidic drinks. These drinks will weaken your enamel when consumed over a long period of time. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water throughout the day. 🧃🥤🙅‍♂️

Visit us every 6 months! Regular dental cleanings and exams are important to maintaining optimum oral health. 👩‍⚕️🧑‍⚕️🦷

There is no definitive age for loosing teeth. You can expect your child to lose their first tooth around 5-7 years old, but it could also be as young as age 4 or as old as age 9! Routine x-rays can help us evaluate exfoliation timing and help us put your mind at ease. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please let us know! 🦷🧚✨

When choosing a toothbrush, it is important to grab one with soft bristles. ‼️🪥

Hard and medium bristled brushes can cause gum recession and even damage the enamel on your teeth when paired with an abrasive toothpaste. Soft bristled toothbrushes are gentle on soft tissue and effective at removing plaque and bacteria. Some brands even carry extra soft bristles for patients who have severe tooth sensitivity. 🦷🪥✨

Did you know not all cavities are visible during an intraoral exam? Dental x-rays are necessary for a comprehensive exam and to evaluate areas where teeth touch together. Interproximal (the space between two teeth) cavities can progress very quickly, especially in baby teeth. Check out the graphic above showing the rapid change in decay over a period of 6 months! The AAPD recommends routine x-rays at 6-12 month intervals for most children. 🦷📸

All of our locations use digital x-rays that emit minimal radiation, 80%-90% less than traditional film! If you ever have questions regarding x-rays or the treatment your child is receiving, please ask one of our knowledgeable team members. 😁✨

Are you or your child a gum chewer? While we always promote sugar-free gum, there is an option that is best – xylitol gum. Chewing gum made with xylitol can be a beneficial addition to your hygiene routine! 🫧🦷

Chewing gum increases saliva production which helps to reduce acid that can cause erosion to teeth. Chewing gum can also help to cleanse the grooves of your teeth between meals. Unlike other sugar-free gums, research has proven that xylitol gum inhibits the growth of oral bacteria that causes cavities! Some of our favorite brands are Purr, Spry, and Zellie’s. 😁👍

Did you know an alligator has 80 teeth? Each tooth can also be replaced up to 50 times if lost! 🐊🦷😱

We are thankful there are only 20 primary and 32 permanent teeth to take care of. 😁🦷

Due to the size of a primary tooth, the best option for a large cavity is typically a crown. When all the decay is removed and a fragile, reduced tooth structure remains, a filling will likely fail before the tooth is ready to exfoliate. A full coverage crown gives the tooth protection from additional decay and chewing forces. 🦷💪

It’s National Children’s Day! 🎈🥳

Our offices celebrated last Thursday by wishing our patients a “summer chalk full of fun!” It’s always children’s day at a pediatric dental office, and we wouldn’t have it any other way! 🎨☀️🩵

Gingivitis is often discussed during a dental cleaning for 10-20 year old patients. 🦷

Simply put, gingivitis means inflammation of the gum tissue. This is a result of poor oral hygiene and bacteria accumulation around the gum tissue. Healthy gums are pink (or brown in some ethnicities,) firm, and come to a point between teeth. Unhealthy gums are bright red, puffy, rounded between teeth, and often bleed when brushing. 😞👎🏼🦠

Gingivitis is reversible but can lead to gum disease without the proper intervention. If you have concerns with your child’s oral care, please let us know. We love to educate our patients and guide them on a path to a healthy smile! 😁🩵
