Hard soled shoes can mould babies delicate feet to the shape of the shoe, rather than letting them develop and strenghen naturally. Soft, good quality leather is ideal for baby shoes as it is breathable (babies feet sweat twice as much as adults!), hard wearing, and the suede soles have excellent grip for when they are on their feet.
