MYJ: How Yoga Helped My Arthritis Anxiety Come to an End

YogiTemples, as a passionate part of the yogi community, loves to bring together stories about yoga. We all find our way into yoga in a unique way; it’s part of the beauty of yoga. This most recent Yoga Journey, then, came to us at just the right time. Read below to find out how someone suffering from arthritis changed things very quickly with yoga!

Life is tough, and for someone who spends all day in and out of cold water, it was something I got used. However, having spent one too many years plastering walls and having my hands coming in and out of water buckets, and a fair amount of lactic acid build-up in my joints, I started to feel it. Just as I got beyond the infamous 50 mark, I started to feel it every day. Arthritis, the scourge of many a human, had arrived.

By 51, I was barely able to clench my hand into a fist without feeling a lot of pain and discomfort. So, I started to look into solutions to find out what I could do. In among lift after list of expensive drugs and workout treatments I’d already tried, one thing kept standing out. Yoga.🧘‍♀️❤️🧘‍♂️

Yoga? Isn’t that for druids to do down the beach?
That was my (ignorant) view of the yoga industry. I saw it as something for people who were absolutely nothing like me. And so, I decided that the best thing that I could for myself was this: give it a go, call a local studio, and go along and try it. Seemingly, it was brilliant for my arthritis – which was now getting a lot worse.
Within a few weeks, though, I was starting to notice a minor change in the way that I could move my muscles and joints again. I started to feel physically fitter; even other issues that I’d lived with for years, such as back pain, were beginning to fade.
By week six, I was actually beginning to forget about my arthritis. Only when I would stretch my hand out in a very particular way again would I feel the strain. My day-to-day work was back to being as easy as it had been since my early 40s!
The first kind of yoga that I tried out was something known as Iyengar yoga, but my teacher told me that bikram yoga would be another good choice to look into. The yoga was quite intense at first, but I soon got used to the feeling it produced throughout my body. Now? Now I am arguably in the best position that I ever been, physically.
It started to make a huge difference to how I felt on a daily basis, and before long I would start to make more and more ambitious moves again at work. While I still have my limits – it’s not magic – yoga has definitely improved my ability to keep on working. For me, it was one of the best things I have ever done: it gave me back the missing gift of flexibility in work that, for so many years, was missing!
If you’re like me and feel a lot of needless pain at work due to arthritis, give some Iyengar yoga a try. It’s tough, but it’s well worth it: I know for a fact I’ll be going, locally or doing it at home, for the rest of my days.

MYJ: Yoga helped me to make friends



YogiTemples works with and meets many people from across the spectrum who are interested in making the most of yoga for their own benefit. However, we often hear stories from yogis just like us; stories about how they got into yoga. Our most recent Yoga Journey is one that stood out to us, and we thought we’d share it with our fellow yogis!

As someone who spends a lot of time hiding away from the world, making friends has never been easy. From a young age, I found it hard to bond with others. My sense of humour, and my sense of perspective, long seemed to clash with those around me. Even my family, who I believe love me dearly, would find me straining at the best of times. It’s hard to change the very fundamental fabrics that make up who you are, though.

That’s why, for me, it was so easy to learn about yoga. I found it relatively easy to stay physically fit, but I would probably spend a bit too much time in my own head. Such was my inability to make friends, I would join running and cycling clubs – and then spend all of my afternoon with my headphones in!

It was hard to talk to people. My interests were often very particular, and my opinions often different to what people want to hear. Some believe I perhaps suffer from a social anxiety condition; given I often clam up a soon as I need to talk with someone, or say the wrong thing, perhaps they had a point.

One day, though, I was on one of my local walks with a few associates. One of them, who clearly liked me but found me a bit odd, turned around said: “Why don’t you try some yoga?”

It came from nowhere. I looked at them quizzically, as if to gesture that they should explain themselves. And so they did: “Yoga is great for people who hate talking…it opens you up a bit. You know, socially.”

I looked into it, partly wondering how I could disprove them. However, it all seemed to check out. Yoga, I was told, helps to stimulate something known as oxytocin, seemingly the ‘love hormone’.
