For the past 33 years, July has been an important month for the disability community. The Americans With Disabilities Act was passed on July 26th, 1990. Disability is a spectrum encompassing a vast uniqueness of differences. Including neurodiversity. However, it is important to recognize that, contrary to the societal norm, disability should not be seen as existing โwithout.โ Pride means celebrating.
๐ฆพ I no longer see myself as a negative part of the word disability. To me, Disability means the society disabling US from having the accessible freedom to have access. Disability has a profound way of bringing people together. Having a disability isnโt easy either. Nor is our everyday โinspiringโ. We are us. You are you. We are meant to be here.
๐ฆพI ๐๐ข ๐ฃ๐ค๐ฉ ๐ ๐๐๐จ๐๐๐ก๐๐ ๐ฅ๐๐ง๐จ๐ค๐ฃ. I AM a strong, Asian American and Paratriathlete who has a disability.
๐ฆพDisability pride month is also about celebrating our achievements! Look how far weโve come? Disability does not mean you are not worthy of a beautiful life.
๐ฆพThe biggest tip I could give to get to embracing your difference is purposely involving yourself within a community that means the most to you. You donโt have to be a pro or a big advocate. Be brave enough to be willing to learn about the different part of you. The disability community is as magical as Disneyland..but cheaper and a forever accessible .
