Medial tibial pain syndrome
AKA SHIN SPLINTS
are a common complaint of runners
and other athletes who have just taken up
running. Shin splints is a term used to cover all
pain in the anterior shin area but there are several
possible causes. Medial tibial pain syndrome, refers to pain felt over the shin bone from irritation of the tendons that cover the shin and their attachment to the bones. Changes in duration, frequency or intensity of running can lead to this condition.
When the muscle and tendon becomes inflamed
and irritated through overuse or improper form, it
will cause pain in the front of the shin. Repetitive
pounding on the lower leg, such as with running,
can also lead to pain in the shin.
Cause:
- Repetitive stress on the tibialis anterior muscle
leading to inflammation
- Repetitive impact forces on the tibia (running and jumping)
Symptoms:
- Dull, aching pain over the inside of the tibia.
- Pain is worse with activity.
- Tenderness over the inner side of the tibia with possible slight swelling.
Immediate Treatment
- R.I.C.E.R.
- Anti-inflammatory medication (see doctor).
- Then heat and massage to promote blood flow and healing.
Rehab Exercises:
- standing calf raise
- Seated calf raise
- Single legged deadlift
Rehab Stretches:
- heel back calf stretch
- Archelles stretch

You’ve heard about carpal tunnel but here is Ulnar Tunnel Syndrome
One of three major nerves responsible for motor function and sensation in the hand, the ulnar nerve runs along the inside of the forearm down to the heel of the hand. In the hand, the ulnar nerve radiates across the palm and into the little finger. Pressure on the ulnar nerve can result in pain, loss of sensation and muscle weakness in the hand.
Cause:
- overuse of muscles and tendons of the forearm, like golf or any other sports involving throwing.
- Abnormal growth in the wrist, such as a cyst.
- Sudden trauma to the ulnar nerve within the ulnar tunnel.
Symptoms:
- Weakness and increasing numbness on the little fingers side of the hand.
- Difficulty grasping and holding objects.
- Tingling along the inner forearm, especially when the elbow is bent.
Immediate Treatment:
- Cease activity which is causing pressure on the ulnar nerve.
- Avoid keeping the elbow in a bent position.
Rehab Exercises:
- Wrist Curls
- Plate Pinch
- Reverse Wrist Curls
- Rope Winding
Rehab Stretches:
- Rotating Stretch
- Palms-out Forearm Stretch
- Wrist Stretch

chondromalacia patellae (also knowed as runner's knee)
Softening and degeneration of the articular cartillage of the patella in athletes is usually a result of overuse, trauma or abnormal forces on the knee. In older adults it can be a result of arthritis. Pain under the patella and a grating sensation when the knee is straightened are signs of this condition.
the cartilage can become damaged and softened by repetitive micro-trauma due to overuse or abnormal load bearing on the knee. this degeneration makes the surface rough which causes additional inflammation and pain.
Cause:
- Repetitive micro-trauma to the cartilage through overuse
- misalignment of the patella
- previous fracture or dislocation
Symptoms :
- pain that worst after sitting for prolonged periods or when using stairs or rising from a seated position
- tenderness over the patella
- grating or grinding sensation when the knee is extended
Immediate treatment:
- rest and ice
- anti-inflammatory medication
Rehab exercises:
- stationary bike
- leg extension
- dumbbell step up
- dumbbell walking lunge
- wall sit
Rehab stretches:
- lateral side stretch
- standing quad stretch

Anyone involved in athletics there’s nothing new to an ankle sprain, an acute injury to any or all of the ligaments that support the ankle structure. Tearing or stretching of the ligaments can occur when the foot is rolled or twisted forcefully. High impact sports involving jumping, sprinting or rubbing on changing or uneven surfaces often lead to ankle sprains. Basketball, football, cross country and hockey are a few of the sports commonly associated with ankle sprains.
Symptoms
- first degree sprains: little or no swelling, mild pain and stiffness
- Second degree: moderate swelling and stiffness, moderate to severe pain, difficulty weightbearing and some instability in the joint.
- Third degree: severe swelling and pain inability to weightbear, instability and loss of function in the joint.
Treatment
- R.I.C.E.R.
- Second and third degree may require immobilization and immediate medical attention should be sought
Exercise:
- calf raison
- ankle jumps
- Single legged calf raise
- Goose steps

Symptoms may last anywhere from 2 minutes to 2 weeks.
Cause:
- blow to the head or shoulder exemple, like football tackle
Symptoms :
- burning pain
- radiating from the neck to the arm and/or fingers
- muscle weakness
- numbness, tingling or burning sensation of the skin
Immediate treatment:
- ice
- immobilize the neck region
- anti-inflammatory
Rehab exercises:
- Isometric lateral neck
- Isometric forward neck
- Isometric rotation neck
- Isometric rearward neck
- Single arm dumbbell row
Rehab stretches:
- lateral neck stretch
- Forward neck stretch
- Neck extension
