“When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are inauthentic or negative, they learn a powerful lesson of how they are perceived in the world,” explains Katie Potter, a senior literacy manager. “If readers cannot find characters who look like them and experience life in ways that they can relate to in the books they read, they can feel alone and isolated, all negatively impacting their academic engagement." While the publishing industry has much progress to make, the fact stands that showing children - all children- in books is crucial. Read to understand more of this important issue and what's being done within the industry.

❤️ Reading may be fundamental, but for many children it isn't very fun. Just as some students struggle with math anxiety, others are reluctant to sit down and read a book on their own. “If your initial experience with any phenomenon is more failure than success — if reading doesn’t start out as a happy thing — it’s kind of counterintuitive to expect that kids will want to come back to it,” says professor and author Peter Afflerbach.
