Why do you exercise? 🏃‍♀️ Have you ever thought about it? Is it to retain (or regain) your shape, to “fix” a health problem, or to mark it off your to-do list? 📋✅

Last week I released a beginner core workout for perimenopause, and this week I’m releasing my personal favorite core moves for perimenopausal changes. But please: Don’t do these vids to lose weight or to lose belly fat, do them because it feels good to be strong. 💪 Do them because it feels good to bless your body with movement! Because it feels good to develop a loving, trusting relationship with YOURSELF.

I believe deeply that our thoughts and our emotions impact our physical body and our symptoms. 👂And I believe deeply that we can learn to **listen to** our physical symptoms as messages about what our body needs, and we can become our own healers. ❤️ Move from going through the motions of exercise and trying to “fix” yourself, to creating your juiciest most pleasurable and connected life.

In The Academy, we don’t go straight to the pelvic floor. In fact, in all of my programs, we start with the surrounding areas first! 👉I love this quote from Dr. Ida Rolf, “where you think it is — it ain’t.” Meaning: the place where it hurts is not necessarily the **source** of the problem. We must look at the WHOLE person, above and below the pelvic floor, and energetically and emotionally around and in the pelvic bowl, to truly understand the root cause of the issue.

What started out as structural/physical can become mental and emotional. What started out as mental or emotional can become structural/physical. It’s all connected and getting to the bottom of this can be FUN 🤩 and can help you in all areas of your life!

If you’ve done those and want more, check out The Academy. 😘 No matter what, remember: there is hope and there is help. This pelvic challenge of yours might end up being the greatest gift to help you w**d out OTHER things that are going on underneath the surface. ❤️

You may think it’s just a pelvic floor problem, but there’s SO MUCH GOING ON UNDERNEATH. Usually, the pelvic floor issue is just the tip of the iceberg. **Under the pain, tension, and muscle weakness are often fears, limiting beliefs, and/or a fundamental lack of safety that’s getting in the way of true healing.**

You might need to start thinking about your pelvic problems DIFFERENTLY. 🧐 It’s not just about doing a few Kegel exercises and calling it a day. Exercises and stretches are wonderful, but there’s MORE to be explored.

Find a provider who takes a holistic approach to pelvic health, or explore my online offerings. I support you to:
✅ modify limiting beliefs that are holding you back
✅ release extreme self-pressure, unrealistic expectations, and self-doubt
✅ remind you that healing is not linear

Everything impacts (and is impacted by) everything else. ♾️ It’s all connected and needs to be considered when treating pelvic symptoms! Examples:

💙Nutrition/gut health: Gut inflammation or dysbiosis causes pain in the abdomen and pelvis, motility issues like constipation 💩 or diarrhea, and mental symptoms like brain fog, anxiety, and depression. Also impacts hormones. Constipation causes straining, contributing to hemorrhoids and possible prolapse over time.

💛Stress (etc.): Trauma stored in the body can cause muscular tension and pain. Stressors and fears create states of nervous system hyper- or hypo-arousal, contributing to changes in breathing, circulation, and pelvic muscle function.

💗Physical (etc): THIS IS TYPICALLY THE ONLY AREA THAT’S ADDRESSED WHEN TREATING THE PELVIC FLOOR. Laxity or excessive tension in the pelvic muscles (which is often due to contributions from other areas in the Venn diagram!). Postural habits. Connective tissue disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. Birth-related injury or trauma. Injury sustained during a fall (i.e. broken tailbone). Mechanical irritation of pelvic nerve(s). Excessive sitting. Incorrect body mechanics when lifting.

🩶Knowledge and beliefs: Lack of understanding about the body and pelvic floor, in general, creates fear. A belief system that says, “This is just what happens when you get older; there’s nothing you can do about it; the only thing that can help is surgery.” Generational trauma and patterns of fear or shame associated with being a woman or having a womb and menstrual cycle. 🩸 Lack of faith in the medical system which has failed women throughout history. 👨🏻‍⚕️ Belief/mindset that the body is broken, your va**na is broken, and there is no hope and no help.

💚Hormonal: Pregnancy hormones create laxity in tissues and joints…. Perimenopause and menopausal hormone shifts contribute to changes in mood, motivation, weight gain/weight distribution, and tissue health… Hormone imbalances associated with endometriosis and other hormone-mediated diseases contribute to increased pelvic pain.

🙏 This is meant to inform, not overwhelm. Work with someone who understands that ALL aspects matter.⚕️

It’s not just about fixing your pelvic floor structurally, it’s about changing your relationship with your pelvic floor.

At this point, your pelvic floor isn’t necessarily the source of your problems. 👉Perhaps it started that way, but right now there’s (probably) a whole lotta mental + emotional baggage that’s built up around it that’s creating even MORE discomfort than the original issue or injury that started it all!

“All parts of me are welcome here” is a teaching that’s based on Ta***ic philosophy. 🧘🏽‍♀️ To truly welcome all parts, you must see and acknowledge your obsessing 😩, fixating 😠, and fear 😱 even as you move toward empowerment, upliftment, and joy.

This is the “shadow work” of pelvic health! Seeing the light *and* the dark, the pain *and* the power. This helps you develop a relationship with your emotional self, your physical body, and your symptoms.
