Halloween has become an important holiday, with millions of people dressing up as their favorite characters. Although some connect Halloween to pagan celebrations, it actually has significant Catholic roots, with the name "Halloween" coming from All Hallow's Eve, the Vigil of All Saints' Day. The liturgical focus on mortality and the end times during this period of the Church year adds to the atmosphere of gloom. Dr. Marcel Brown of the Alcuin Institute for Catholic Culture explains that Halloween is the celebration of the Feast of All Hallows' and a day when Catholics celebrate the triumph of the Church in heaven and the lives of the saints on earth. The focus on the eerie or mysterious has a Catholic aspect, reminding us of death and end. Bishop David Konderla of Tulsa, Oklahoma, stresses the importance of maintaining the Catholic meaning and purpose of all holy days and explains how customs can be done in a Catholic spirit, while avoiding those things that are contrary to our Catholic faith.
