Our final Best of Category Winner for Wild Card has been coming to our show since the beginnings in 2018, its ! Its been a joy seeing how the themes in Kest's work have been elaborated on each year.

In Kest's words - "This piece catches Baba Yaga's city home (made of taxidermied pigeon and hand cut, handformed steel) come in for a landing in the midst of a block modeled after real NYC tenements. I like to think that those wings would protect the whole block if she happened to be around in a rain storm, or as shade on the hottest summer days, but I don't know how generous you like to imagine Baba Yaga's house as being."

We may not know how generous Baba Yaga's house may be, we do know your generosity is a delight to witness! Congrats Kest!

The Best of Category winner of our Wearable Wunderkammer is ! Karen wowed us with an interactive performance presentation, combining dance, music, and spoken word to illustrate a touching story about family and relationships with many twists and turns. This was also the first time an artist presented their work this way, so she wins that accolade as well!

In describing this beautifully crafted ring, Karen states - "REVENGE is a ring made from sterling silver, watch glass, and dead mosquitos. I created this piece when my studio was in a basement in Ohio where, strangely, during the freezing winter, a swarm of mosquitos circled me daily. They were unusually slow mosquitos, so when I started killing them to avoid being bitten, they were an easy catch. I wound up with a large pile of these bloodsuckers on my desk. Staring at the pile and seeing beauty in all the shapes and angles of their bent legs and bodies, I decided to make a ring memorializing the beasts. This REVENGE was had (and created!)."

Thank you for bringing your creativity and spirit to our show Karen-though it was your first time on stage but we hope it won't be your last!

Our Best of Category winner for Bone Zone is ! Laura is another first time participant at our show, and her work deeply resonated with us.

She says - "My piece features a roe deer skull with gilded horns/teeth and pearls mounted on black velvet in a Victorian-style frame with dried flowers, as well as a locket with deer hide and hair inside. In this piece, I explore the idea of honoring animals through a sense of intimacy and beauty by including a small memorial token associated with the animal. Using animal bones in my artwork tells stories that connect to human memory and emotion. Viewers also create a physical connection to the piece through the act of opening the locket and revealing the secret memento."

We applaud Laura for her beautifully poignant art, and for her work as an art teacher! We are so honored to have you as part of our community, thank you.

Our next award winner is .taxidermy who got Best of Category in Anthropomorphic Animals. This was Tracy's first time at our show, coming to NYC all the way from Seattle with America's favorite family-The Addams!

She says - "This piece is a love letter to my- no, to OUR family, primarily inspired by the 1964 canon. I am extremely proud of the loving detail I put into each character and I know that Wunderkammer has an audience who will sincerely appreciate it. In addition to the animals I skinned and mounted, each costume, wig and accessory is handmade by myself- with the exception of Morticia's iconic peacock rattan chair.
Starring:
Gomez the Squirrel (roadkill) ,
Morticia the Ferret (naturally deceased pet) ,
Pugsley the Gopher (I have a friend in pest control),
Wednesday the Rat (pet store feeder).
Thing (racoon paw)

The humor, tenderness, and details are a reflection of the artist's work and personality-cheers to you Tracy!

We will now be sharing our Best of Category Winners! First up is our Unnatural History category with and his stunning work Ophelia! Nick describes his piece - "This work was created using different dyed animal skins sewn together to create a realistic representation of a conceptual animal I designed. This fictional species is a way for me to express and explore my gender identity."

Ophelia also has a blacklight reactive brand, which surprised and delighted our audience upon reveal! We love how fantasy is a powerful element of self expression, and truly appreciate the conversations ignited by Nick's work!

Our next artist is , our Second Runner up for Best of Show! Emma's anthropomorphic creations are always a crowd favorite, and full of incredibly specific details.

In her words - "I had the idea of making a circus piece with multiple raccoons. I then thought 'Why not do a 2 headed raccoon that is 1/2 male and 1/2 female'. I really wanted the look of the 1920's with the gangster/flapper outfit and I made sure to include alcohol due to the prohibition. The piece is titled 'The Roaring Sideshow' due to the Roaring 20's. I then wanted the sideshow banner to look simple, but have a slight edge to it. I thought including an x-ray shot of the raccoons was perfect for the time period. Giving the sideshow audience a look into what the attraction is they are coming to see. I feel the sign gives a little more "freak" to the attraction and also resemble what a sideshow banner would look like in the 20's. I used 2 closed mouth raccoon head forms, and modified one of them to make an open mouth. I used a jaw set without tongue in order to place the cigar in the mans mouth. Wires form the "skeleton" of the raccoon, making sure the weight of the 2 heads are balanced, and the body filled with polyfill. The outfit is made by my seamstress. The sideshow banner has been painted with acrylic paint on a large piece of canvas and then was clear coated. I cut individual holes into the banner, placed the lights and hot glued them on. The frame and gold accents of the stage are made with wood. I then put resin on the floor of the stage. I took nice, red velvet material for the curtains of the stage and attached it to the wood with velcro so everything is able to come off. I used upholstery gimp and large tassels to hold the curtains back. The Roaring Sideshow small banner was painted with acrylic paints on canvas, clear coated, and attached with velcro so the piece is able to come off as well. I know that conjoined twins are always the same s*x, but I wanted to make the piece a bit more fantasy and almost have 2 main sideshow attractions together."

This piece and many of Emma's other amazing creations are up for sale on her page, definitely check it out!

Continuing with our winners, our 1st runner up is ! Molly's work is exemplary in redefining the boundaries of our Wild Card category, and what one would see at a taxidermy show.

In her words - "The piece is a print from the body of a rat flattened by a car found in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, in May 2022, and this piece is a gyotaku print of a pigeon that was hit by a car that I found in Williamsburg in the fall of 2022. Some feathers from the pigeon remained attached when I pulled the paper away while making the print. Inspired by Japanese Gyotaku printmaking (originally used by fishermen to prove the size of their catches, before cameras), I make prints from roadkill that I find on the streets of New York. After making a few prints I give the animal a proper burial with candles and music. Later, I make a copy of the print and wheat paste it near the spot where I found the animal. I hope to memorialize the animals that we typically pass over and disregard, and to highlight the beauty in what we typically turn away from."

These and over 25 of Molly's works are currently on display at in Brooklyn until January - giving you more chances to can see her work!

We are recovering after our big show, and will be spending this week sharing all our winners with you! First up, our Best of Show winner , who proves a big impact can come from a small piece! Here are Katie's remarks about her work - "This is my piece Dirty Dancing and I think it’s kind of obvious where my inspiration came from, I used to be a gymnast myself so start experimenting with sports acrobatic mice poses and then thought to myself 'What is the most iconic lift out there?' and of course immediately thought of Dirty Dancing and this beautiful pair were born. I am a self-taught taxidermist, and I’ve always created my mice in quite a whimsical and cartoonish style. I try as much as possible to steer clear of costumes and like to work with just the mice because I feel like you can really capture the movement if you can see their entire body. Thank you so much for taking the time out to appreciate my work and I hope you all have a wonderful evening oh and remember nobody puts baby in the corner?" Congrats Katie, and thank you for sharing your art with us!
