Recently, the UK Govt. decided to ratify the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This presents an opportunity for Fairs and the culture built around them to apply for ICH status, something that can help safeguard their future..
The Dept. for Culture, Media and Sport has opened a consultation on ICH. would strongly encourage individuals & orgs with an interest in the survival of Fairs to fill in the consultation by midnight 29 February. https://dcms.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9MsgupKs6P9kxw2
These would include:
-Showpeople across the UK
- Local Orgs, community events & festivals that are supported by funfairs & recognise their contribution to local life & culture
-Educational & charitable orgs that work with Travelling Showpeople.
-Researchers & funfair enthusiasts
The consultation form uses a lot of 'govt speak' so FS has developed some guidance notes to share advice we have received from ICH experts. This includes suggested responses, but feel free to fill it in as you see fit! You can find the guidance here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/15afuTvJYAV4CxWbghbIv7QADkoOM13pD/view?usp=sharing
If you have any questions that the notes do not answer, then please do DM us and we'll do what we can to help!
Guidance for UK Gov ICH Online Consultation โ complete by midnight 29 Feb 2024 (v2)
*Current UK Government Consultation on ICH โ closing midnight 29 Feb โ Guidance from Fair Scotland (urgent โ pls share)*
Greetings -
Please see attached pdf (detailed guidance) and below (basic links) which Fair Scotland Trustees have worked hard to compile. With apologies for the tight turnaround, we hope you will share this with relevant organisations and individual Showpeople so we can have a broad range of submissions from across the UK.
This consultation represents an important opportunity and we urge you to both fill in the survey and to share widely. Please note that this guidance will be relevant for Gala Day, Common Riding, Highland Game Committees as well as individuals.
*We sincerely hope you will take a few minutes to complete this short survey by midnight 29 Feb.*
Best Wishes,
Fair Scotland Trustees

*Re: Current UK Gov Consultation on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH)*
The UK Government announced on 23 Dec 2023 that it will ratify the UNESCO Convention for Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH). Towards this, the Dept of Media Culture and Sport opened an online consultation which closes 29 February 2024.
Fair Scotland has taken advice on the consultation as it relates specifically to the potential of ICH status being granted for Fairgrounds and Showpeople across the UK.
*We strongly encourage individuals and organisations to fill in the online survey by midnight 29 February, including:*
๐๐ฝ*Showpeople* across the UK (as individuals)
๐๐ฝ*Local organisations that have Fun Fairs supporting their community events* (including AIS, SIRP, ACES, ACP, and local councils). You can use this guidance to highlight the historic importance and contributions of Showpeople and other communities to your local area.
๐๐ฝ*Any organisation that relies on Showpeople to support their events* (Highland Games Committees, Gala Committees, Local Fetes, etc). You can use this guidance to show your support of Fairs and other traditional community events receiving ICH status.
The consultation uses a lot of โgovernment speakโ so weโve produced the pdf guidance to share the advice we have received. We provide suggested responses below for all questions, but of course fill in as you see fit.
