#59 All About Teri Rizvi and the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop - Estelle Erasmus 10/11/2023

My latest episode of Freelance Writing Direct focuses on Teri Rizvi and Erma Bombeck Writers Workshop

Some more info: I met Teri Rizvi back at the Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop in 2018, I believe. She asked me to do a speed dating session for writers and I had such a great time doing it. Then, during the pandemic, I did a virtual session on how not to be ghosted with editors for the conference. I’m excited to be speaking with Teri now for Freelance Writing Direct, especially because registration for the conference is an appointment event, and it begins next week on November 15th.

As an only child, I felt responsible for caring for my aging mom. I resented having to balance family life and caregiving. She resented caring for her widowed mother, but she had no one to share the responsibility with as an only child. She put her mom in a nursing home.

I just got back from the Atlanta Writers Conference and was pleased to receive this in my email. This kind of feedback is one of the reasons why I teach, and why I wrote Writing That Gets Noticed. Also, sometimes the advice I give that I think everybody knows, but I say it anyway, is exactly what the person needs to hear from me.
The email:
Just wanted to reach out and say thank you so much for being willing to come and speak to us writers and dole out some of your wisdom! It was great to get some thorough insight into the publisher/writer relationship, and I especially took a lot out of your advice on dealing with frustration and stalls with writing.
I've been going through a bit of a funk lately with my writing in terms of feeling a little discouraged and lacking in confidence, so learning to just go with the flow and take things one page and one day at a time, and sitting down to write whatever comes to me in the moment if I've stalled, are some really great pieces of guidance.
So thank you so much, hope you got back safe and sound, and appreciate all you do for your fellow writers! "

Who were you in a previous life? - Digital Party 31/10/2023

My first non-publishing-related piece since I wrote my book.

I wrote for The Digital Party about a past life experience I had at the Edgar Cayce Institute. The piece came out right in time for Halloween and all that bumps in the night. Seriously, going into my past --and who I found there -- was an amazing experience and taught me a lot.

#57 Writing About the Medical Industry and The Cost of Living - Estelle Erasmus 27/10/2023

I loved speaking with Emily Maloney for Freelance Writing Direct. I first connected with Emily through Facebook. I watched as she traversed through her publishing journey, and quickly got another book deal right after publishing her first, a rare, and exciting situation. I like how she used a mixture of personal, and reported elements to tell her story in essays of the broken medical industry. I worked in the medical education part of the industry in the CME and promotional side for seven years (as I discuss in my book), so I was especially interested in reading about Emily’s journey.

In this episode:

The inspiration behind and evolution of Emily’s book, Cost of Living [2:27]
Emily’s research process to get specific details for her essays [5:43]
Writing about a broken system, and getting feedback from people with opposing views [10:05]
How she details her personal medical experiences [13:17]
The benefit of finding a supportive writing group [22:08]
Her next book [25:15]

The widespread support of the terrorist organization Hamas on college campuses and throughout the country has now become a U.S. security issue.

Why? Hamas wants the extinction of the Jewish people first (that is in their mission), and America, second (also in their mission).

They don't want women to have rights and they hate LGBTQ+ people.

Don't forget who backs them? Iran.

And where does Iran get their money? Follow the money ...

I Spoke at the Annual Writer's Digest Conference in August - Estelle Erasmus 13/10/2023

I published this last week.

I Spoke at the Annual Writer's Digest Conference in August - Estelle Erasmus I was a speaker at the Writer's Digest Conference in NYC.

06/10/2023

From one of my Writer's Digest students. I love when they share how my guidance is opening them up to new horizons.

"I started this course because I wanted to be able to write my family history with more liveliness than names and dates.

Estelle has listened to my many questions and given me ideas on how to do that with "spirit."

She has also encouraged me to build upon some of my writing assignments and be courageous enough to submit them for possible publication.

I'm 80 years old. Even if I decide not to pursue a writing career at this season of my life, Estelle has opened up a whole new perspective of other avenues to consider."
