The Gunne Sax brand was founded in 1969 in San Francisco by designer Jessica McClintock and quickly gained popularity among stylish young women in the 1970s to 1980s. Their dresses were known for romantic, whimsical designs featuring lace, ruffles, floral prints, puffed sleeves, corset style lacing and other Victorian/ Edwardian-era details. McClintock aimed to create a line of dresses that reflected a nostalgic, feminine and bohemian style. The name “Gunne Sax” was inspired by the words “gunny sack”, referring to a coarse fabric commonly used for sacks.
