Life is a journey, and therefore a story. It is in our hands how it will be told. ✒️
Work is never as easy as counting one, two, and three. I thought it was before I actually found myself in MGM Accounting, Bookkeeping, and General Services. It was my first time doing a hands-on job, which made me feel excited and nervous all at the same time. Especially when it came to the interview with the owner of the firm, named Maribel Tenorio. Yet at that moment, I felt determined that I wanted the job. I thought I would grow and learn under her guidance, and it turns out I was not wrong. In MGM Accounting, Bookkeeping, and General Services, I had not only come to realise the reality of life but had also obtained the ground skills of an accountant and knowledge of accounting that were outside the four corners of the classroom. My experience at that firm is probably something I will never forget.
Working in that firm made me realise that adult life is hard because I came to realise that money does not grow on trees. It has to be acquired through effort, especially when being an accountant, as I have observed Ma'am Maribel picking up her phone every minute to entertain clients, leaving a number of times a day for different places, and staring at the monitor for hours. And doing the tasks assigned to me was never easy. Everything I do has consequences that may impact the firm since we are dealing with the information and finances of businesses. When writing cash vouchers, there is no room for mistakes; therefore, with every stroke of the pen, every word, and every number, there was always this weight on my chest—like a rock pressing down on me—in fear of making a mistake.
However, despite the constant fear, in my two weeks of working in the firm, I have been taught the valuable skills of being an accountant, for which I am utmost grateful, as these skills will surely help me achieve my dreams in the future. I have not only obtained the basic technical skills of a bookkeeper, such as writing vouchers, posting in the books, and having observant eyes, but I have also gained the skill to persevere through the challenges that may come my way through the number of problems I have faced during my time in that company. In the field of accounting, which is the path I am planning to tread, I saw the importance of never stepping backwards but only forward, even in small steps. Progress is progress, and perseverance is the key.
Additionally, a brand new world was opened before my eyes as I learned the different types of BIR forms, the many types of businesses, and other things through Ma'am Maribel's 30-minute discussions, which tackled information that I believe has not been deeply discussed in school. Every time I find out more about accounting, I always recall Ma'am Mindoro's teachings, which I missed so much. Also, I have not only put into practice the knowledge of accounting I have acquired in the classroom but also added more to it, which strengthens my foundation as an aspiring accountant in the future.
All in all, I have truly been lucky that I managed to experience what it is like to be a real accountant and, at the same time, obtain valuable knowledge and information that gears me up for the future. I am most thankful to everyone that supported me through this immersion, especially the kind owner of MGM Accounting Bookkeeping and General Services, Maribel Tenorio, who guided not only me but my fellow immersion friends as well towards a better understanding of accounting, the roles and responsibilities of an accountant, and the reality of adult life.
