“I’m lucky as I can skip breakfast as I’m never hungry so just grab a coffee and don’t need to eat until later…” Someone mentioned this to me in a session recently and they weren’t the first!

Although it may save you money and time in the AM, not having any appetite for breakfast isn’t actually a great sign and could be a sign that your metabolism could do with some TLC.

Where there is some natural individuality when it comes to metabolism and appetite, if you are a cycling human who is TTC, you should be eating breakfast. For some, simply getting into a habit of eating breakfast could be enough to kick start your metabolism and get your morning hunger back but for others, suppressed hunger could be a sign that your hormones and metabolism are struggling or there may be something else going on.

2WW FERILE BEET SMOOTHIE

We talk lot about supporting egg and s***m health and ovulation but what about the second half of the cycle when the egg and s***m have hopefully done their thing and it’s the time for a fertilised egg to implant? There’s lots going on here hormonally with progesterone and oestrogen looking after the quality and stability of the womb lining to support healthy implantation.
 
This smoothie is packed full of functional foods to support hormonal and endometrial health in the TWW (two week wait).

🤍Flax and sesame: Lignans are compounds which support healthy estrogen metabolism so that progesterone and oestrogen are nice and balanced
🤍Beetroot - Rich in nitrous oxide - research has shown eating beet or drinking the juice in the TWW can increase blood flow to the endometrium and can support implantation

SECONDARY INFERTILITY? FOUR THINGS TO CONSIDER

Not having issues for previous pregnancies and then hitting a road block the next time around can be so frustrating and leave you super confused and wondering - what’s changed this time around?

Making, growing, birthing, feeding and raising a baby is bloody hard work for the body. Depending on how long you are breastfeeding, your body could essentially be service to a tiny human for a very long time and deplete your macro and micronutrients. Clients are often a couple of years older or more than they were last time which can also mean things can take a bit longer and require a bit more TLC.

This “running on empty” can potentially have a knock-on effect on your fertility. If we are too low on resources it may impact our hormones, egg health, menstrual cycle and more.

“After 2 years of struggling with infertility, eating an anti-inflammatory diet, being as healthy and active as possible, hours of research, taking all the “miracle” supplements and tracking our ovulation with the Mira app, we were at our wit’s end.

We couldn’t understand why it wasn’t happening for us even though we’d pretty much become “fertility experts” ourselves by this point. March is here and it’s SPRING (ish 😂). And spring is also WILD GARLIC SEASON!! 🌱

As wild garlic season is so short, I make pesto regularly to squeeze as much as I can out of the season. It’s great on pretty much everything on soups, stews, veggies or with peas, griddled courgettes and asparagus and pasta.

Wild garlic is bursting with antioxidants including carotenoids and vitamin C and has some amazing immune supporting properties including being antiviral and antibacterial.

Here’s how to make it:

FERTILITY BOOSTING PESTO RECIPE.

If you can get hold of wild garlic this will make this recipe bang, but if not using ordinary garlic works too.

🌱1 large handful of wild garlic (or two cloves of garlic)
🌱1 small bunch of basil
🌱1 large handful or sunflower seeds of walnuts also work well
🌱1 large glug of extra virgin olive oil
🌱1 tablespoon of nutritional yeast (or Parmesan)
🌱Squeeze of lemon
🌱Season well with sea salt

Whizz up in food processor or use a pestle & mortar.

Why I don’t buy into positive affirmations + manifestation on a difficult fertility journey…

I find they will work well and resonate for many but not for all…

The mind body / stress-fertility connection is way more nuanced and complex than your thoughts blocking conception! And find that often times, this idea just leads to more stress, anxiety and shame layered on top what many women are already feeling, so I personally I don’t buy into the over simplistic idea that infertility is a mindset issue.

As we talked about yesterday, inflammation is one of the ways our immune system helps us to heal. But when the issue continues and the inflammatory response is unresolved this becomes chronic.

So how would you even know if you have chronic inflammation?

If you suffer from PCOS, endometriosis or any of the inflammatory conditions listed on my last post, you will very likely have a level of inflammation happening in your body.

But are lots of other symptoms to look out for that aren’t related to the reproductive system but may suggest you have a level of inflammation going on:

1️⃣Chronic skin issues (e.g. acne, eczema)

2️⃣Heavy or painful periods

3️⃣Chronic digestive issues

4️⃣Depression

5️⃣ Chronic fatigue

6️⃣Joint pain / body pain

7️⃣Diabetes/ insulin resistance

When it comes to human health and fertility, there’s always nuance in each individual case and just because you have symptoms from the list above doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll struggle to conceive or that it’s necessarily a direct cause. But it may be part of the picture.

If you’re reading this and identifying some of the signs that you might have chronic inflammation, don’t panic. There are lots of things that can be done to help your body heal.

Unfortunately, it’s not always as straightforward as just eating an anti-inflammatory diet (although that’s going to help too). First of all you need to identify what’s triggering your immune system and causing the inflammation.

It might be a food allergy or intolerance, a hidden infection, a reaction to a chemical, mould, toxicity or metabolic issues to name a few… It’s important you get to the bottom of what’s driving it and remove that first or all the healing anti-inflammatory foods and lifestyle protocols aren’t going to get you to where you need to be.

Studies linking exposure to common chemicals in packaging, food, our homes and environment to fertility outcomes have hugely increased in the past 10 years as we are becoming much more aware of their impact on human health.

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) are chemicals found in foods, household products and our environment that mimic our body’s own hormones and bind to receptors and can have an impact on hormones and egg and s***m health.

First of all - it’s impossible to avoid these completely so don’t panic. One of the key values in my practice and a message I want to bring to the work I do is that YOU DON’T NEED TO BE PERFECT TO GET PREGNANT.

It’s all about making mindful swaps and choosing some key areas to focus on, rather than trying to do everything and stressing yourself out in the process. Anything you are doing is going to help reduce your overall load.

We think often think about toxins and pollution being outside but research has now also turned to looking at our environment indoors. There are some simple ways to bring down your toxin exposure in your home….

COTTAGE CHEESE FRITTATA RECIPE 📣

For busy clinic weeks, this frittata has been a life-saver! It’s nice and high in protein with the addition of the cottage cheese and feta, it tastes amazing and is ready to go for a quick brekkie or lunch for a few days!

For cottage cheese haters, blending it with the egg means you don’t get the lumpy texture and it just adds to the creaminess and protein so it’s a winner!

Here it is!

INGREDIENTS:

💚1 small tub cottage cheese
💚6 x large eggs
💚1 large x sweet potato (sliced and boiled)
💚8 sundried tomatoes (in olive oil)
💚Small bunch of basil (leaves torn)
💚Feta cheese
💚8 pieces of broccoli or other green veggie
Salt + pepper


Preheat the oven to 200c
Crack the eggs and add the cottage cheese to a blender and blend for 30 seconds (you can use a whisk to combine if you don’t have blender)
Season
Add all ingredients along with the egg mix into a baking dish and bake for around 20 mins until golden 
Serve with rocket

I shared this as part of my five day de-influencing the fertility journey challenge, so I thought I’d share it here with you guys too…

We’ve developed an obsession with people’s morning routines, it started with the morning routines of CEOs and very successful people and now you can’t move on IG or tick-tock without seeing influencers and others sharing theirs...

The pysiological safety a routine can create is really important routines can be powerful...But the issue I have with most I see on social media (aside from often being aspirational, filtered, and not achievable for most), is that most are geared towards optimising male biochemistry and don’t take into account the INFFRADIAN rhythm that we as women have. And this can be a recipe for a hormonal sh*t storm.

I was talking to a client about this phenomenon the other day. We are all guilty of it...We download the free download, sign up for the webinar, buy the book, sign up for the free course…and in our minds, we feel like we’ve done something to move ourselves forward. It scratches an itch in that we feel like we’ve done something productive but then it just sits in our inbox unread, unwatched un-actioned.
 
Sometimes our minds can believe that knowing something intellectually is the same as doing it. But signing up for something without the action part isn’t going to move the needle.
 
If nothing changes, nothing changes right? And that’s why accountability is so powerful.
