A fascinating epic tale of two generations and an inclusive Michigan history in a national context. www.elizabethhomer.com About the Author: Elizabeth A.

From statehood to the rise of corporations, Pioneers, Reformers, and Millionaires tells an epic story of two generations of western New Yorkers who settled along mid-Michigan’s Grand River. Women in the State Capital’s Story
“About 1838, Mrs. Turner made a visit to friends residing in Mason, going on horseback, accompanied by a relative. She went via Okemos [called Hamilton] in Meridian Township, fording the Cedar River at that point, which was so swollen that Mrs. Turner - then Miss Munroe - was obliged to hold her feet upon the horse’s back to keep them out of the water.
On their return to Clinton County they followed the Indian trail along Grand River and stopped for lunch on the ground, or very near, where the Turner mansion now stands. Miss Munroe was greatly pleased with the location and the fine view it afforded, and remarked that she would not wonder if when she was married, she might someday make her home there.
The prophecy has been fulfilled, and certainly there is no more pleasant site for a home in Ingham County, overlacking as it does, the long sweep of the beautiful river and a broad scope of cultivated country in all directions.
At the time of this first visit the whole region was wilderness. The high bluff bank of the river at this point is clothed with a majestic growth of forest-trees, then open and unobstructed by undergrowth, with cold pure springs gushing from the slopes, and dashing to the river below.
This is today the most romantic spot in the vicinity of Lansing, and with a small outlay could be transformed into a picturesque park.” Samuel W. Durant

Unbossed and Unbought: Shirley Chisholm and her enduring influence in New York City - Coalition For The Homeless 14/03/2024

Why is it I never heard of John Lewis at the time but Shirley Chisholm is part of my eternal memory? When Shirley Chisholm ran for President I was in awe. I especially admired her bravery and daring. How could she have the nerve and fortitude I mused against the blatant misogyny of the period? and she said it was far worse than the racism she experienced. Later when I was older and wiser I was listening to one of her press conferences and figured out the answer- hell, she was brilliant and smarter than anybody present.

This reminds me of the spot with a bench under the staircase at Turner-Dodge. Maybe it is a reading nook. What do you think?
