Designuru is a combined initiative of citizens of Bengaluru who strive at making the public a part of an art and design based initiation. The ambition of this festival is to create a dialogue within the citizens of the city through the lens of community and public interest based works. Through a number of design urban interventions in various public spaces around Bengaluru, the festival seeks to d
Last night, we were treated to a delightful autobiography- Kirtana Kumar’s tales of growing up in the Cantonment through “public sounds” of our city.
We listened to the call of the Johnson market mosque, the popcorn vending machine at Plaza theatre, sounds from garage bands on north road, what her parents grooved to at blue fox -
After three amazing days, we wrapped up- giant follies too- with unexpected efficiency leaving behind a strange silence, some stray panels, plastic, a forgotten box-
We still seemed to cause some commotion on the streets though! Swipe to see/ read Brian’s observation :)
Onto 2023, then.
See you next December, IRL!
(And here, until then!)
Edgar Demello took us on an evocative journey last evening.
His powerful oration of excerpts from his book - written/drawn by him during the ‘covid years’ - transported us - magically - in both, space and time.
As we cycled along the Danube, soaked in the cafe culture of Vienna, explored the Venetian waters via layers of imaginations, rode down memory lane from the BASE archives- Edgar’s narration had us immersed in his story.
You can pick his book up (sans his voice, though) at the BIC when you visit the last-DU-day today!
A photo from last evening’s keynote presentation by Palinda Kannangara- addressing a question from tonight’s keynote presenter George Seemon!
Seems already conversations ‘across the pond’ :)
Come by designuru this evening
> Edgar Demello launches his delightful book capturing the spirit of his travels- anecdotal and imaginative
> George Seemon presents the work and wonder of Stapati.
See you at BIC! 👋🏼
We are ready for you! (Well, almost!)
Here, a few pictures to capture the energy through Sunday’s build at BIC - teams creating impressive, immersive “follies” for you’ll to enjoy!
You will meet a dozen such delights strewn across BIC this edition! Swipe to see the full line up!
Today, tomorrow and day after!
See you there!
!
Listen in on our second keynote speaker, George Seemon of Stapati on Tuesday, 6th December at 6:30pm at the BIC Auditorium!
We think it’s a sense of rootedness, an extraordinary grasp over material potential and an undeniable reflection of the “ethos” of our subcontinent that ties the work of our two keynote speakers together.
Thoughts? Come, draw your parallels (and projectiles!)

Greetings from The Morning After.
Stray images - clearing up 7 days of energy, exhibits, panels.. now with the lights out, the interventions missing and only the noise from the traffic remaining - we can’t help think, did Designuru even happen!? :D
(Of course, it did!)
We’re going to stay here- posting highlights from the Designuru Days as they unfolded the past week.
In the meantime, we have plenty to work on, to learn, to improve - to make Design a significant engagement/ conversation+action in *everyones* life.
Do share your feedback/thoughts/brickbats, here or on [email protected] 🤍
Last evening, at Designuru’s last evening, we revealed a special installation in celebration of our artisans while also commemorating 50 years since the inception of IIID.
50 frames- each handwoven woven by a contributor using any material they had access to- was described by our keynote speaker- Jaya Jaitly - as ‘perfect in its imperfections - much like us human beings.’
Seen in the last two images, few from the team that put this installation together; and also the BMRCL chief getting a sneak peek prior to the unveiling.
We can’t wait to see this installation up in full glory at a Namma Metro station soon!

Wrapping up the day on Design and Communication, curated by Prem Chandavarkar; writes-
IIndia lacks a culture of criticism. Coverage of design in professional circles tends to be more descriptive than analytical. Journalists often say that they are forced to abstain from truly critical writing as architects take it personally and find it offensive.
But what should a culture of criticism offer? Is its primary role to offer rigorous reflection to members of the profession? Or should it aim to build bridges between the profession and the public? Is the purpose of criticism to determine whether a work is good or bad? Or does it seek to go beyond the work’s appearance to seek deeper underlying issues? Should criticism be neutral, or can it be overtly ideological? Should every architect’s work be subjected to public critique? If so, is all critique acceptable, or are there rules of discourse that should be followed?
Come; be a voice of criticism.
The medium of the day moves on; from film, to art and over now to books.
Ashwini Jaisim joins her architect/professor father Krishnarao Jaisim in reading and discussing his book; titled I Do.
We also have with us Chitra Vishwanath; launching Biome Diaries - a book (of three books) - journeying the world and work of Biome Environmental Solutions.
Join us this evening!
This evening; join Ritu Sharma, Director CRE, Boeing- Girija Rangaswami, Texas Instruments and Laila Khalil from Sales Force to assess, what it takes to be future-ready in the corporate real estate world.
Come, ask them anything!
Thank you, .world for hosting this session!
On the day of Design and Communication, we look forward to driving discussions on art, design in diverse mediums.

It’s Day 04 at Designuru - and the day of History and Preservation. Curated by INTACH Bangalore, we’d like to bring this action packed day to a close by asking the important questions-
Why must we preserve our past for the sake of the future?
What can we, as citizens, do to nurture fast disappearing parts/nuances of our city?
Will our participation make for successful conservation of heritage?
This evening; 4:30pm
At the Rangoli Arts Centre,
MG Road, Bangalore
Join artist/writer/ Suresh Jayaram and researcher/writer/ Meera Iyer as they share chronicles, anecdotes, stories, discoveries, interpretations, fables of our beautiful Bangalore - the neighbourhoods, the streets, the markets, the livelihoods that we know, or knew or should know!

Baited breath for this jugalbandi (?) that’s scheduled from 6pm to 8pm this evening!

We have limited seats in the auditorium - but will also play it live on the screen outside! So come one, come all (masked and vaccinated, please) This is going to be epic!
We remain amazed by the diversity of the architecture and design fraternity in Bangalore and dream that Designuru can be/become that one open, unhinged platform for all voices and ears!
Three practitioners share a platform today - and we look forward to listening in on their journeys (accelerations and bumps too!) - as they built phenomenal practices- Kanvinde Rai & Chowdhury, Biome Environmental Solutions and Oikos and under their leadership!
This event is hosted by Women In Real Estate Network and will be moderated by Fancy George.
Let’s unveil the ‘creative processes’ - the spinning of an idea into something new and inventive - of a writer, a filmmaker, an art critic and an architect.
Architect Nagaraj Vastharey moderates this insightful conversation between Vivek Shanbhag, Nisha Mathew Ghosh, Pawan Kumar and Deepa Ganesh.
