Just a heads up - this year we are going to have some local people with products to sell so bring along some extra cash. Also try and car pool if you can as we almost have a full house so parking will be at a premium. See you Wednesday!

Do you get stuck with knowing what to say when someone dies? Well, guess what, you’re not alone!

We are often so fearful of getting it wrong, we wind up doing and saying nothing to the bereaved - even though we know that’s worse.

In my nine years of dealing with grief and loss, this is what I’ve learned about what to say and do when someone you know is bereaved. Note, I don’t say, newly bereaved, because many of the tips below have a very long shelf-life. Which is good, because, frankly, so does grief!

My top tips on what to say and what to do:
💔 Ask us, how are you doing today? Note the emphasis on the word ‘today’ signaling you know every day is different. For those who have been grieving for months or years, ask, how does your grief feel now? How is this year different to last? How does your grief evolve over time?
💔 Offer to share your memories of our loved ones, or even of how you saw them behave/interact with us.
💔 Let us talk. If you think we are over-sharing please understand it’s our brain’s way of trying to process what’s happened; talking about it helps us make sense of our loss. This takes time and many iterations.
💔 Stand by us through our depression. Depression is a common (but usually temporary) symptom of grief, as people grow to accept the reality of their loss. Friends, family and coworkers often want to cheer us up, but we need you to read the room (!), stand quietly by us and understand it’s part of the process too.
💔 Know it’s never too late to talk to us about our loved ones, and to say you’re sorry, never too late to write a note, or to ask us how we feel.

As a resilience researcher, I know lack of support is the biggest risk factor facing the bereaved. But grief can be lonely and the bereaved very often feel isolated.

I encourage you to consider the different types of support when wondering what you can do to help….

EMOTIONAL SUPPORT: a shoulder to cry on, someone to listen to the story again and again and again

PHYSICAL SUPPORT: we sometimes need your physical presence, just to stand next to us, or attend certain times/events/meetings

PRACTICAL SUPPORT: managing the flowers, mowing lawns, cooking, driving, responding to email, organising thank you cards, planning anniversary days

MEMORY SUPPORT: sharing your tales of our loved ones and keeping precious memories alive

INFORMATIONAL SUPPORT: someone to guide us in areas we're not so familiar with – maybe the legal stuff, finances, religious protocols, all the childcare/school routines.

If you’ve found this helpful, please feel free to share. Since our daughter was killed back in 2014, I’ve been on a mission to help people cope with loss, and to inform others what they can do to help.

"You've got to keep your cup full......"

What does that even mean?

If you have heard this analogy before, or even found yourself using it but haven't really stopped to reflect on what it means in your life, please keep reading.....

Keeping Your Cup Full is an analogy I have been referring to since my own journey with Self-care began. It is often bandied around in conversations among women, and sometimes not given a second thought.

I have created a complimentary PDF to help you get clear on what keeps your cup full, and what empties your cup so you can assess your balance and understand why Self-care is so important!

You will come away with a clear understanding of how full your cup is and where you may be out of balance so you are better positioned to make some changes.
I have included a helpful visual reminder at the end (I'm a visual person myself!) so you can display it for yourself as a constant reminder of what you need to do to keep your cup full.

To get your hands on this great personal reflection activity please click the link in my Bio or in the comments below.
