I am still wrapping my head around the news that one of my seniors, fellow College of Engineering, Guindy alumna, pioneering engineering woman (and much more), Dr. K.S. Babai, is no more.
For a limited time, I am making her "Roots and Wings" story available as a pdf for reading.

I had the honor of contributing to this compendium from the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE)
with five stories of the College of Engineering, Guindy alumnae, including the one about the first woman engineer of India, Lalitha, all of which appear in my book, "Roots and Wings."

So, many of you might have watched the coronation of King Charles III.

It brought to mind a story in “Roots and Wings” of my batchmate Annapurna Prasad.

Anna graduated in 1971 with a mechanical engineering degree from the College of Engineering, Guindy. She got a master’s degree in Food and Agricultural Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a degree in Engineering Management at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Armed with her knowledge, she headed her family’s business - National Engineering Company Madras (NECM) Private Limited, which traded and manufactured agricultural implements.

NECM was the first Small Scale Industry (SSI) unit in the Ambattur Industrial Estate, Chennai, to have been recognized as a Research and Development organization by The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), Government of India.

This brings us to King Charles III and the Prince of Wales’s visit to the Small Scale Industry Expo in 1980. I enjoy seeing this picture of Anna and Charles and wanted to share it with all of you.

Radha Basu, the CEO of iMerit Technology, and a Distinguished Alum of the College of Engineering, Guindy, is a trailblazer and a globally celebrated technical woman. She pursued an education in engineering, when not many women were doing so, became a wildly successful technical entrepreneur, and then went on to make her mark as a social entrepreneur. Radha endured many personal tragedies, and her resilience in the face of these tragedies is awe-inspiring.
Here is a quote from her in the book "Roots and Wings: Inspiring Stories of Indian Women in Engineering."

Remembering Parvathi on her birthday, August 8.
Parvathi Mattancheril graduated from the College of Engineering, Guindy, in 1960 with a degree in telecommunication engineering. She was a leader in technical education. In her career of 34 years, she was the principal of three different women’s polytechnics in Tamil Nadu, working to advance women’s standing and participation in the world with practical education in technical fields. An introvert, Parvathi went about quietly accomplishing what she needed to do. Her leadership was inclusive, valuing opinions and encouraging participation from her faculty and staff. Many of us are not extroverts, but that doesn’t need to hold us back. We have a very good role model in Parvathi of how much a good introverted leader can accomplish.

Today is Kamala Subrahmanyan’s 92nd birthday. In her story in Roots and Wings, she said: "In the workplace, there is a perception that some jobs are important, and others are not. But I feel that, in all organizations, every job matters. Some jobs may get recognition, while others may not. I believe that, if one gets involved in the work, even a job which may appear mundane can be made interesting by identifying ways to improve the job and deliver value."
Happy Birthday, Kamala! 💐💐💐

I am thrilled to share that my book Leadership Lessons with The Beatles was released this month.

Many of us engineers are great problem solvers. In my experience as a global software engineering leader, I have found that we all could use a bit of mentoring to help us with the humanistic approach to leading. This book does that.

You can find details on the publisher's website: https://www.routledge.com/Leadership-Lessons-With-The-Beatles-Actionable-Tips-and-Tools-for-Becoming/Mohan/p/book/9781032212562. It includes a preview.

If you prefer to read on Kindle: https://www.amazon.in/Leadership-Lessons-Beatles-Actionable-Becoming-ebook/dp/B09ZY76S33

I was fortunate to have endorsements from several thought leaders, educators, and Dr. Anand Deshpande, Chair, Persistent Systems, was kind enough to write the Foreword.

I invite you to give it a read. If it resonates with you, please buy it for your team of aspiring leaders. The publisher offers discounts for bulk purchases, and I can put you in touch with the rep.

Roots and Wings tells the stories of Pioneering CEG Alumnae

When I retired from the company I co-founded, I started mentoring alumni from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pissburgh, USA, where I did my doctorate; and College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), Chennai, India, where I received my bachelor’s degree in engineering.

I started to think about how there is a lack of role models for girls to pursue education in technical fields and what I can do to address it. I contemplated writing about the women pioneers in engineering as a way to create role models and put them in front of girls. I saw that A.Lalitha, my fellow alumna from CEG was the first woman engineer in India. I started researching her story, and decided that I would write about the women who graduated from my alma mater, CEG, and collect thier life stories into a book that can be read by anyone interested in girls’ technical education.

I wrote this book to serve as an informal historical account. It is set in a transitional period when Indian women successfully broke through cultural and institutional barriers to work as equals of men in technical domains that were exclusively male till then. It is a collection of 29 life stories. It starts with the stories of the first set of women to graduate from CEG, and ends with the stories of those who graduated along with me in 1971.
