Tonight's Club Meeting was a lot of fun, with our Membership Committee's Book Week Theme, We had wonderful table decorations made by Kathryn, and were given cute bookmarks made by Karen, with a special message on each. Several Zontians were in costume and one pirate even gave out gold coins. Yes! Of course there were jokes and Zondarme by Margaret and we collected books from our generous members that we can use in our next Soft Room Project, or donate to a local org. Stay tuned for more news on that. Our President Amanda managed to keep us all on track and we got all the work done as well. Our Secretary Cassidy joined via Zoom to take all the notes, and we also had 2 guests and an induction. What a great meeting! Thanks to the wonderful staff at the Harvey Road tavern for looking after us so well.

So innovative and practical. Well done!

Two Toolooa State High School students were today awarded as the Gladstone regional winners
of the 2024 Future Makers STEM Inventors Challenge, presented by Queensland Museum and
Shell’s QGC business.

Aspiring inventors Emily Masters (Year - 10) and Hui Yan Hannant (Year - 8 ) wowed judges of the
regional student competition with their design concept called DV Bracelet — a discreet wearable
device which would safeguard victims of domestic violence.

The life-saving feature of the prospective product is a button that instantaneously alerts authorities
and texts a trusted contact with a GPS location, while recording valuable audio evidence.
To avoid detection and preserve dignity, Masters and Hannant stipulated the unisex bracelet would
be available in a wide range of designs and colours, and ideally distributed freely via vending
machines in hospitals and women’s health centres.

The concept was selected from a shortlist of designs, all responding to the challenge to come up
with an environmentally friendly, technology-based solution to a problem faced by youth in their
community.

Open to students in Years 5 to 10 in the Gladstone region, the competition started in May with an
in-person group workshop teaching technical design principles, organisational strategies and
robotics coding using Picoh and Micromelon robots.

Our Club President, Amanda Smedley, and President-Elect, Cassidy Kennedy, travelled to Gin Gin to attend this Leadership Training on Sunday, and network with other Zontians and the Area 2 Director.
Interested in further developing your Leadership Skills? Please feel free to get in touch.

The first of our District 22 Leadership Training sessions happened on Sunday, when Area 2 Director, Nshara Kingston, led President Training for the Area 2 Presidents.

Area 2 extends from Zonta Club of Rockhampton Inc in the north, to Zonta Club of Maryborough in the south. The venue was the Wild Scotsman Motor Inn Gin Gin, and a huge thanks to owner Jamie for allowing us to use the dining room at no charge for the day! We appreciate the support. The training went very well and everyone was so engaged that Nshara forgot to take more photos once everyone got there. It was a great day of leadership learning for our Presidents, as well as a valued opportunity to catch up and network.

Joining Zonta provides many opportunities to develop skills and gain confidence in Leadership roles and our structure provides built-in support for those who wish to take on these roles.

Aussie Ariarne Titmus wins 400m freestyle gold at the Paris Olympics 27/07/2024

We wish all our Australian Olympic athletes the best of luck and look forward to seeing them compete well, no matter the outcome. Congratulations to Tasmanian Ariarne Titmus, who has made history. "Titmus shows off her second consecutive women's 400m freestyle gold medal after the famous victory"
"The win made Titmus only the second Australian woman after Dawn Fraser to successfully defend an individual Olympic swimming title, with Fraser last accomplishing the feat way back at the 1964 Games"

Aussie Ariarne Titmus wins 400m freestyle gold at the Paris Olympics In the so-called race of the century, the Tasmanian-born Titmus clocked three minutes 57.49 seconds to win from Canada's Summer McIntosh (3:58.37) and Ledecky (4:00.86).

An inspirational Zontian!
Just one of the inspirational Zonta women.

👩🏽‍🏫 ZONTA HISTORY LESSON

Q: Who set up Zonta in Australia? A: Dorothy Avery Thompson.

Between 1965 and 1971, Canadian Dorothy Thompson organised clubs in all Australian capital cities and in five cities in New Zealand. Dorothy joined the Zonta Club of Toronto in 1929 and remained a committed member until her death at the age of 103. She filled her retirement years by traveling the world and organising a total of 35 new clubs in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Africa, England and Scotland. Our club's predecessor, The Zonta Club of Melbourne, was the first Australian club established following Dorothy's 1965 visit and thus the first in what would become District 23.

This month we caught up with two dynamic Zontians, to celebrate their Zontaversaries. Thank you Heidi Moller, who clocked up 14 years of membership in June! Heidi has served on various Club committees and has regularly helped at a wide variety of Club events. She particularly loves hosting our breast cushion workshops. Mitra Khakbaz celebrated her two year membership in June and has certainly hit the ground running. She transferred to us from the Zonta Club of Caboolture and is now our Advocacy Chair and Director. Thank you Heidi and Mitra! We are very lucky to have you both with us.

Thanks also to Karen Pope, who made our new selfie frame.

At last night's Club meeting we were thrilled to have two new members join the Board of our Club. Cassidy Kennedy (Secretary - Minutes) and Mitra Khakbaz (Advocacy Chair and Director) were installed by our District 22 Lieutenant Governor, Robyn Liddell, and are pictured here with our President, Amanda Smedley. We were fortunate to have Mitra transfer to our Club from the Zonta Club of Caboolture. Mitra has vast experience with advocacy for women's issues and is also the CEO of the Gladstone Women's Health Centre. Cassidy is one of our Young Professional members, and is a Lawyer (Senior Associate) with Chris Trevor and Associates. Thank you both for stepping up and congratulations on your new positions. We look forward to working with you both.
