There are many recipes for bricks...but the primary ingredient is always clay soil. Clay is a sticky binder/glue. Usually in adobe, you are using clay to bind sand and/or straw together. Many recipes also call for cow or horse manure. And many 'ferment' the mixture before making bricks.
Fermenting simply means leaving the wet mixture to sit for a period of days or weeks. This releases cellulose from any straw, adding to the stickiness...and it makes the mixture more pliable to work with and more resistant to cracking.
Forming the bricks involves filling a mold with your wet mixture, and then almost immediately lifting the form off. The bricks are laid in the sun to dry until they are firm enough to stand up. Then the bricks are rolled into a vertical position to dry further. Baking in the sun increases the strength of the bricks.
Cob is the same mixture as adobe, but it is formed in place instead of making bricks. The benefit of cob, is that it's easier to make curvy walls and sculpt niches right into your wall. The benefit of adobe is that you do the work & allow the material to dry fully ahead of time. Then the wall-building goes extremely quickly and doesn't require a long drying process in situ.
Any clay wall provides thermal mass...that is, they act as a battery for heat energy. Getting warmer when there is a direct heat source (sun, fire, hot air) and releasing heat whenever the surrounding environment is cool/cold.
