The Bahamas is home to six species of birds found nowhere else on earth. These birds are the Bahama Yellowthroat, Bahama Warbler, Bahama Swallow, Bahama Oriole, Bahama Nuthatch, and Inagua Woodstar.
The Bahama Yellowthroat is a large warbler that can be found on Grand Bahama, Abaco, Andros, Eleuthera and Cat Island. It is related to the migratory Common Yellowthroat which visits The Bahamas during the Fall. Like the Common Yellowthroat, The male Bahama Yellowthroat has a black mask. However, the Bahama Yellowthroat is larger, and not only has a yellowthroat, but also a yellow breast and belly.
Our Bahama Yellowthroats inhabit scrublands, coppice and pinelands and is primarily insectivorous. They are often more heard than seen as they prefer to skulk around in dense vegetation.
When Hurricane Dorianravaged Grand Bahama in 2019, The Bahama Warbler was the only endemic species seen after the storm. Although, this species can weather storms, habitat loss is detrimental to this species as well as invasive predators like house cats. This species was extirpated on New Providence in the 1990's. Sadly, a lot about this species breeding behaviour and other aspects of its biology is lacking and in dire need of study. Its population status is unknown leaving large gaps in our understanding of this endemic species and how to better protect it form threats.
Despite the research and conservation challenges, The Bahama Warbler is still a wonderful addition to our Wild Bahamas.
