Today will be another hot one, with temperatures running 5-10 degrees above normal. The desert valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado can expect to see triple digit heat this afternoon. Moisture will be on the increase this afternoon, leading to increased shower and thunderstorm coverage. The southern mountains will be most favored. Main threats with any showers or storms will be gusty winds, frequent lightning, brief heavy rain, and small hail. Look for even more expanded coverage tomorrow afternoon.

24/07/2024

Hot temperatures will continue over eastern Utah and western Colorado under hazy and smokey skies. Those sensitive to heat or bad air quality should take precautions and stay inside if possible. A few thunderstorms will threaten the Southern Colorado mountains again this afternoon with gusty outflow winds and lightning. Moisture arrives late tomorrow but will bring little relief from the heat.

23/07/2024

High pressure remains in control today, allowing temperatures to climb a few degrees above normal across the region. Dry air in place will keep conditions generally quiet, with a slight chance of showers or storms lingering over the far southern Divide mountains. Smoke from wildfires across the Pacific Northwest and Canada will continue to stream in, leading to hazy conditions over the majority of eastern Utah and western Colorado.

22/07/2024

Much drier and warmer conditions will be seen across much of the area today as drier air continues to move in from the north. Moisture will remain pooled across southwest Colorado and along the central divide mountains where storms are more likely to fire. Expect gusty winds, small hail and brief heavy rain with storms particularly across the southern San Juans and southwest Colorado valleys. Temperatures will heat up in this dry period through mid week with a return towards triple digits for the lower desert valleys. Moisture and storm coverage potentially increase late Thursday into Friday following this drier period.

21/07/2024

[2:22 PM MDT] Strong showers and thunderstorms are ongoing across southwest Colorado this afternoon. These storms are capable of producing gusty winds, heavy rain, and pea to half inch size hail.

Ready for cooler temperatures and fall color? Think positive! There's only 63 days until the Autumn Equinox on September 22nd. But if you can't wait, there's only 42 days until Meteorological Fall starts on September 1!

21/07/2024

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms will once again fire off the higher terrain, with locations across southeast Utah and southwest Colorado, along with the Divide, most favored. Elsewhere, look for generally clear skies and some gusty afternoon winds. Temperatures will be near normal.

20/07/2024

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms with the summer heat continues. Today will see a downturn in storms, especially across the northern areas with possible localized flash flooding in the southern mountains due to slow moving or training storms while any storms farther north will likely produce gusty outflow winds. Storm coverage ticks back up again Sunday.

19/07/2024

Stormy day on tap as a disturbance moves through in addition to increased moisture resulting in more scattered to widespread coverage of showers and thunderstorms. Again anticipate high terrain to be favored initially with spread into lower valleys late in the day. Gusty outflow winds, lightning, brief heavy rain and small hail all remain possible. Temperatures will continue to be near to above normal. A downturn in storm activity is expected this weekend into next week as drier air moves in from the north.

18/07/2024

High temperatures will run three to five degrees above normal today across eastern Utah and Western Colorado with isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms developing over the higher terrain this afternoon, tapering off through the evening hours. This forecast will change little for the foreseeable future with some days being a few degrees cooler with more showers and thunderstorms, and other days a little warmer with fewer storms.

17/07/2024

Warm, near to five degrees above normal temperatures today across eastern Utah and Western Colorado with isolated to scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms along the Divide and over the San Juan Mountains. Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms return across the region tomorrow and Friday with temperatures cooling to near normal for mid-July.

16/07/2024

Lingering moisture under high pressure will fuel another round of showers and thunderstorms across the region this afternoon and evening with higher terrain favored. Clouds and showers will cause temps to continue trending downward, though afternoon highs will still top out above normal. Expect weather conditions to show little change during the remainder of the week.

15/07/2024

🌡️ Temperatures remain seasonably warm through Friday.

⛈️ This week thunderstorms capable of producing strong outflow winds and small hail develop each afternoon, especially in the high terrain.

14/07/2024

High based thunderstorms producing dry lightning on the heels of prolonged hot, dry period has significantly raised the potential for new fire starts over a large portion of eastern Utah and western Colorado. This has prompted the issuance of a Red Flag Warning which is effect from noon to 9 PM today. Meanwhile, hot conditions persist across the region and Heat Advisories continue across portions of eastern Utah and the Grand Valley through 9 PM this evening. Above normal heat and daily afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the week as high pressure lingers over the southwestern U.S.

13/07/2024

Another hot day is on tap with near-record temperatures. Temperatures remain above normal through the upcoming week with afternoon storms forming over the mountains for the next several days.

12/07/2024

Record high temperatures possible today and tomorrow. Afternoon storms are possible in the mountains for the next several days. Storms may produce strong wind gusts and small hail.

📈 Temperatures will continue to climb into the weekend. Near record highs are expected Friday and Saturday.

⛈️ Afternoon showers and storms will develop over high terrain each afternoon with an increase in coverage expected early next week.

10/07/2024

Temperatures will continue to rise as high pressure approaches. Isolated to scattered showers and storms are possible in the mountains this afternoon. Showers may produce localized gusty winds.

10/07/2024

Record setting heat in the West will be shifting our way through the weekend. Now is the time to prepare for an extended period of hot temperatures especially over the lower desert valleys. https://weather.gov/safety/heat

09/07/2024

The warming temperatures are helping to use what little moisture we have to produce an uptick in thunderstorm coverage this afternoon. Unfortunately the main threat will be new fire starts from lightning but the strongest storms could have small hail and gusty winds.

09/07/2024

High pressure over the Great Basin will continue to push temperatures upward across the West Slope today. Highs will be nearly 5 degrees above July climatology this afternoon. A few scattered clouds are possible, especially along the Continental Divide, where afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected to form again today. Storms will be short lived and diminish by sunset.

08/07/2024

A few stronger storms have popped over the southeast San Juans this afternoon. Small hail and gusty outflow winds will be possible over portions of Archuleta County over the next few hours before these storms dissipate.

08/07/2024

High pressure will build eastward and produce near record high temperatures this week for much of the area. Afternoon highs are expected to be 10-20 degrees over July climatology. Afternoon showers are possible along our southern Divide mountains, but confidence is low in measurable rainfall and extent of areal coverage. Monsoon moisture potentially returns late next weekend.

07/07/2024

High pressure remains in control bringing mostly sunny skies and warm temps to the region. Dry conditions along with some breezy winds of 20 to 30 mph will bring critical fire weather conditions to portions of eastern UT and extreme SW CO. Red Flag Warnings are in effect.

June 2024 Monthly Climate Summary

---------------------------------
For a written June 2024 climate summary, please visit our website athttps://www.weather.gov/media/gjt/June2024_ClimateSummary.pdf
---------------------------------

The month of June started off with lingering showers over the terrain and near normal temperatures, but that changed real quickly, with conditions drying out and temperatures jumping well above normal. The desert valleys of eastern Utah and western Colorado saw their first triple digits of the year. At the Grand Junction Regional Airport in the week between June 7th and the 14th, 5 new records were set. Four were tied or broken record daytime highs, and one was a broken record high low. By the middle of the month tropical moisture began working into the region, with temperatures cooling to near normal, and storms firing off the terrain. The dry air at the surface would take a while to saturate, so for the third week of the month, gusty winds, frequent lightning, and even some critical fire weather were the story across the region. Finally, the last week of the month saw moisture saturate all the way down, and heavy rain became a real concern. In addition, the concern for severe weather was heightened, especially over June 20th-22nd. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch was issued for the first time, and indeed, several severe thunderstorms formed, producing hail over an inch in diameter, severe winds, and very heavy rains. Flash flooding from these storms occurred in multiple areas, including Grand Junction and Moab. A few days of a break snuck in between the 24th and 26th, but severe storms and flash flooding made their return to close out the month.

The month of June was overall warmer than normal, with all ten of the automated weather observation stations located at airports across eastern Utah and western Colorado finishing the month with above normal mean temperatures. Mean temperature departures ranged from 1.8F to 5.6F above normal. The warmest temperature recorded at any of the ten observation sites was 103F at Canyonlands Airport on the 12th. The coldest temperature recorded at any of the ten sites was 34F at Durango-La Plata County Airport on the 2nd. The month of June was overall wetter than normal, with eight of the ten automated weather observation stations finishing the month with above normal total precipitation. Departures ranged from 2.72 inches above normal to 0.28 inches below normal. The most precipitation fell at Durango-La Plata County Airport, where the month-end total of 3.17 inches was 2.72 inches above normal. The least precipitation fell at Vernal Airport, where the month-end total of 0.36 inches was 0.14 inches below normal.

---------------------------------
*Please note that all data mentioned is collected from our automated observing stations from 10 different airports across eastern Utah and western Colorado. Some of our cooperative observers in more remote areas may have measured warmer or colder temperatures, or more or less precipitation than what was mentioned in this summary.*

06/07/2024

A ridge of high pressure to our west will keep the West Slope under steady northwest flow today. Strong winds aloft will mix down to the surface this afternoon across the region and combine with low relative humidity to produce critical fire weather conditions for northeast Utah and northwest Colorado, where fuels are receptive to wildfire growth.

Josh Mattson, Renewable Operations Maintenance Foreman at the Shoshone power plant in Glenwood Canyon, receives his 15 year Length of Service Award. Congrats Josh!! The plant has been providing the NWS with daily temperature, precipitation and snow data since August 1, 1909. These data/observations were integral in the engineering of I-70 through the canyon.

05/07/2024

Dry, warm and occasionally breezy weather continues through the weekend. This regime will bring the return of near critical fire weather conditions across northern portions of Colorado and Utah. A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Saturday for zones where fuels are critical. Monsoon moisture doesn't look to return to the region until early to mid next week.
