Vitamin Deficiencies To Look Out For
Living a lifestyle has its challenges for sure, especially when it comes to choosing what we eat. One of the other challenges I want to highlight today are the vitamin and mineral deficiencies or insufficiencies that living gluten-free exposes.
B12, Vitamin D and Calcium, B vitamins, Vitamin A, E, K and iron deficiency are some. One of the main reasons, especially with those recently diagnosed with , have problems with nutrient absorption. This is because we have these finger-like microvilli lining the intestines that grab the nutrients in our food while it is being digested. When there is damage to those villi, as do those with CD, they can no longer grab those nutrients efficiently, which can cause a deficiency/insufficiency.
Low levels of vitamins in the body and brain can cause many disruptions such as depression, anxiety, fogginess, fatigue, tingling in the fingers and toes, headaches, blurry vision, early onset of osteoporosis, irritability, muscle pain, thinning hair and brittle nails.
If you think you might have a vitamin deficiency, contact your doctor or you can have a vitamin deficiency test done easily on your own at a place like Quest Diagnostics Lab or any type of diagnostics lab that is similar in your area. Sometimes this may be out of pocket expenses or your insurance might cover under prevention expenses. Definitely worth taking the time to check out.
The article I attached from Gluten Intolerance Group is a great resource on some of those vitamins we might need to have checked out.
