Remember, as you work on those DNA trees this summer, scammers are everywhere.

Sadly, people have now started taking DNA tests in order to scam others by getting personal information and trying to get something to help them financially.

Be very careful messaging people who do not have a family tree. Me, I just ask if they could build their tree to their deceased ancestors at least.

Summer time is coming, what is everyone working on this year?

Me, I really need to get my Oak Grove Cemetery book ready for publishing. Section A is almost ready, Section B is going to take longer.

Anyone have any brick walls?

Thank you everyone who helped with the fundraiser. Five more years have been purchased to keep GlynnGen online and ad-free!!!

02/03/2024

I just learned that I do NOT have to pay taxes on this money!!! However, we still haven't reached our goal. We still need about $500; even though it's not taxed, the fundraisers still take a piece.

The PayPal Fundraiser will end in a few days, however, you can contribute directly via PayPal at anytime.

Thank you to everyone who has helped so far, and remember, you can help just by spreading the word! Let's get that last $500!!!

Still fundraising! We've only raised enough to maybe get another year after I pay taxes on these funds and the fundraisers take their cut.

Remember, this is to not only keep GlynnGen online, but to keep it advertisement free. I'm sure you've seen those websites that are just so full of ads that you can't really see the content, or know if somethin is content vs. an ad, like on Find-A-Grave, for example.

GlynnGen is 100% ad-free; I do not make any money from this website. Like most of you, I have two jobs and no disposable income. If you cannot help with funds, you can still help by sharing the fundraisers ;-)

New file, a summary of the Civil War pension file for Edward "Ned" Harris, formerly enslaved by the Dunham family in Liberty County, Georgia.

Pvt. Edward "Ned" Harris of the 103rd U.S.C.T. Company C; Glynn Co., Georgia Four years ago, Mrs. Patricia Harris-Davis handed me the military pension file for the brother of her ancestor, Jacob Harris. When she originally started her research, she believed Jacob to have been enslaved at Retreat Plantation on St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia.

Dear researchers; remember, this fundraiser is to keep GlynnGen.com online, for free access. (see first two comments for links).

If you have not noticed, there isn't a single click-bait advertisement on GlynnGen; I do not make any money from the website. I am not wealthy and I do not generate an income from GlynnGen.

Otherwise, it would be covered up in advertisements, like you see on Find-A-Grave and many other websites. I work two full-time jobs and freelance; that's three jobs, and I still can't make ends meet, let alone pay for server space.

GlynnGen is completely free. Free to access and free of advertisements and I need help to keep it that way.

Any little bit helps, whether dollars or sharing the fundraisers on your profiles and other groups/pages you can share such content.

Thank you to all who have helped in the past, to all who have continued to help over the years, and to all who will help in the future.

Keep GlynnGen.com Online for Free Access 13/02/2024

For those who don't like GoFundMe, here is the PayPal Fundraiser link. This fundraiser will only be online for 30 days starting now (02/13/2024).

This fundraiser is to purchase more years on the domain names, the server space, and the free access to the server.

Thank you to all who can help; the goal is to purchase at least FIVE YEARS for about $2500 (includes overage to pay taxes on funds).

Keep GlynnGen.com Online for Free Access I first started GlynnGen.com in 2004, there were many free webservers available; eventually, the site grew too large for a free server so a secured web domain had to be purchased. For 15 years, I was able to afford keeping the site online; unfortunately, the government is more willing to forgive col...

It's that time again! More time on the server is needed! I am trying to raise enough funds to at least purchase FIVE YEARS for the server space and domain names.

I could not use Facebook this year since I was unable to turn GlynnGen into a 501c3 as I had planned, but, maybe, soon, I can get this done. I do not want to accept funds for this just yet as I need to create a board of directors before I file. Right now, we just need to keep the website online :-)

If you don't like to use GoFundMe, you can also send funds directly to PayPal by clicking a PayPal link on the GlynnGen website, or you can mail a check directly to me at:

Remember, GlynnGen is not a 501c3 any checks must be written in my name.

Thank you to any who help keep GlynnGen.com online for free access for a few more years!

So, I can't go live and film in landscape on Facebook! I will have to upload a video later.

11/02/2024

I am going to try livestreaming the Hofwyl event from the GlynnGen Page so that it is public. I did this last year and it came out okay so I will try again this year.

I will not have a link to pre-post, however, I will try a test video when I get to Hofwyl to make sure I remember how to do this LOL

So stay tuned to the GlynnGen page: https://www.facebook.com/glynngen

Enjoy a pre-game show today at 2PM at Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation in Brunswick, Glynn County, Georgia!

Should too many people arrive, we will have a second program at 4PM!

Those who couldn't see the 2PM show will be taken on a tour of the burial ground (if they wish) and will get to learn about all the preservation and conservation efforts in the making.

Then, those who attended the 2PM event can go on this same tour of the burial ground.

THE LAND -THE PEOPLE- THE ANCESTORS

In February 2020, the Friends of Hofwyl introduced a program called “I am Hofwyl”. It was, however, more than program. It was the beginning of a very special project.

The project began with a faded 19th century list.

The list was an inventory appraisal of property owned by Dr. James Troup at the time of his death in 1849. Scattered among the list of cattle, sheep, furniture, and furnishings were 357 names—the enslaved workers of Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation.

Valued only for their utility rather than their humanity, it is the earliest known list identifying that largely forgotten enslaved population who built and maintained one of the wealthiest rice plantations on the Georgia coast... and it is the genesis of the I AM HOFWYL project.

I AM HOFWYL seeks to not only identify the 357 barely legible names on that faded list, but to, where possible, replace the de-humanizing dollar value scribbled next to their names with faces and families.

The 1st program presented in 2020 identified over 25 probable African American family surnames associated with Hofwyl and three DNA linked local African American families still living in Glynn and McIntosh Counties. The 2020 presentation drew other African American families from as far away as Tampa and North Carolina. Unfortunately, COVID interrupted further program activities.

So, at 2:00PM on Sunday 11 February 2023, at Hofwyl Broadfield Plantation, the Friends of Hofwyl will be re-activating the I AM HOFWYL project with a very special program.

Plan to join us as we discuss The Land – The People – and The Descendants that built Hofwyl.

Thanksgiving 2023 - Tradition, Origins & Meaning | HISTORY 24/11/2023

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day, being thankful for all our many blessings that we enjoy in the now thanks to those who have gone before.

This one was a particularly sad one for my adopted family as it is the first one without the matriarch; however, we had several more new families joining us this year, taking the focus away from the loss.

Here is some light reading for those of you who are trying to recuperate from yesterday's feasting:

Thanksgiving 2023 - Tradition, Origins & Meaning | HISTORY Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States, and Thanksgiving 2022 occurs on Thursday, November 24. In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies.

It's that time of year again! We are buying genetic genealogy tests (DNA kits) for Christmas presents.

Remember folks, these tests are not for entertainment; they are a real DNA test which means, if you are not ready to learn something "other" than what you've always known, don't take this test.

You may find out that your parents are not your parents. Or that your child is not your child, or that there is a child out there no one knew existed.

If you do take the test, also remember that Ancestry cannot build your tree for you; so please do not click, click, click away adding everything Ancestry shows you on your hints tab.

Do the research, and put proper legal names in the name fields ;-)

That being said, My Heritage has kits on sale for $39 (no, I do not get any profit from this mention).

Attended the "The Last Laird of Sapelo" (by T.M. Brown) book signing tonight; it was well attended and entertaining, can't wait to read the book!

Upon leaving Fort King George, I decided to take a picture and right when I was thinking about the shot, someone landed in the background.

The Fort is very peaceful and beautiful at night, and the skirl of bagpipes made it that much more enjoyable.
