Dominance in bilingualism: concept, assessment, research and theory

Dr. David Birdsong, University of Texas at Austin
ABSTRACT: Language dominance, an essential feature of bilingualism, is receiving considerable scientific attention. Work on dominance is conducted along four intersecting axes, around which this presentation is organized. What is dominance in bilingualism: basic concepts, clarifications, nuances. Assessing dominance: instruments and indices, and their interpretation. Dominance as a predictive factor: classic and state-of-the-art research. Theoretical perspectives: attrition, plasticity and the "balanced bilingual." The presentation includes apposite comparisons ofresearch on bilingual dominance with research on manual laterality (handedness).
