NO FLORAL FOAM: I’ve spoken many times over the years about how toxic floral foam is and the damage it does to the earth and us. This topic can sometimes get floral designers feeling defensive and this is not the purpose of this post.

It comes from a good place, I am passionate about nature, animals and creating beautiful wedding florals in the most sustainable way I can. It definitely takes more time & effort but it can be done.

There are certainly many things that need to change in our industry. Pesticides, social injustice, poor soil management practices, harmful chemical bleaches and dyes, and intensive greenhouse growing conditions are just some of the issues that require our attention. But eliminating the use of single-use plastics is perhaps the easiest and most meaningful change you can make. Thanks for this note

I sometimes get push back regarding sustainability and flown flowers but when our local flower growers season ends, we rely on flowers from abroad. What we do not need to rely on is floral foam and this is in our control.

🍃Floral foam is a single-use plastic. It starts out as plastic and ends up as microplastics.
🍃Floral foam leaches chemicals and plastics into the water which has an effect on organisms who ingest this. A study in 2019 in spoke extensively about this issue.

But we can take action:

🍃Wedding Planners: Ask floral designers to design without the use of floral foam

🍃Wedding Couples: ask for foam free floral designs from your floral designer.

🍃Florists: It may be convenient to use but the damage to the environment and person outweighs this.
Ask for help from others in the industry who can provide environmentally sound ideas to support your designs. Allow more time for designing mechanics that can be reused.

There is definitely positive change happening but we can do better.

Some couples who choose a castle as their wedding venue are led to believe that they must also choose a traditional, neutral colour palette.

🍃I don’t agree with this. In fact I think adding colour intentionally to a room through floral designs, can elevate the tablescape.

🍃If you have vibrant, colourful personalities, let me translate this into your floral designs, whilst being mindful of the tones and textures in the space.
