Hiddensee’s Complex Past

Built at Petrovsky shipyard in St. Petersburg, Russia (then Leningrad) in 1984 the Tarantula 1-Class Corvette is a great staple of Soviet Russia. The USNS Hiddensee started it’s fighting for the East German’s People’s Navy (also known as the Volksmarine) in 1985 under the name of Rudolf Eglehofer. After 5 years in 1990 with the reunification of Germany the ship was transferred to be controlled by the Federal German Navy until April of 1991 when it was decommissioned. From here the United States Navy took control of the ship and was instructed of the systems aboard by 20 former East German Sailors. The Navy used the ship for 50 deployments in the Chesapeake Bay, Virginia Capes area including rigorous systems testing. The Navy used the ship up until April of 1996 though mainly as a research vessel for its later years of Navy Service. In June 14, 1997 the missile corvette was transferred once more to Battleship Cove where it sits today.
