NEW VIDEO: "S*X & ELECTRICITY" (Scene 11) from "TESLA" (multidisciplinary opera) Music by Carson Kievman and Libretto by Thomas Babe & Carson Kievman (with Mark David Needle). Tesla’s laboratory in Colorado Springs. In swirling haste, Tesla is writing in his journal as the workers, under the urgent direction of Charles Steinmetz, come and go, finishing preparations for a new, large-scale experiment meant to prove Tesla’s latest theories. There are indications of a brewing storm, and distant lightening....

Part truth (Destruction of Colorado Lab in storm during testing of Tesla Coil) and Part Artistic License (S*x).

MTT recovering from brain surgery. Wishing Michael well 🌹

Dear friends and music lovers,

I recently returned home from the UCSF Medical Center. After a series of tests, it was diagnosed that I had a brain tumor and that an immediate operation was necessary. The operation was successful. I’m embarking on a course of therapy for the next several months. This means that I must curtail my public appearances through the end of October. I plan to return to the stage in November. I am very fortunate to be cared for by the excellent team at UCSF and their national and international collaborators.

Thank you for your love and prayers. See you soon!
MTT

Our Story

SoBe Arts is a nonprofit organization for music, music-theater/opera, multimedia and related arts production and performance & arts education.

Last September/October (2017) with a herculean effort our dazzling creative team were in rehearsal for the world premiere of my opera TESLA, which Artistic Director Carson Kievman began composing in 1986 at the Eugene O’Neil Music Theater Conference. In 1992, while finishing my collaboration with co-librettist, Thomas Babe, Carson and his family were hit head on by Hurricane Andrew with 256 mph wind gusts leaving intense destruction in its path! This was followed in a few years by Tom Babe’s tragic early death. The process of finding a premiere was long and arduous and in spite of a successful workshop of two scenes at the 2004 Vox Festival by the New York City Opera and Encompass New Music Theater, there was little to no interest in a project about an (unknown at that time) immigrant scientist from Croatia/Serbia. Finally, in 2017, with a virally exploding interest in the critical ecological lessons to be learned from the prophetic ideas of genius inventor Nikola Tesla, a production by SoBe Arts was underway.

In the middle of rehearsals the company devastatingly struck by Hurricane Irma, sending almost the entire creative team out of state and seriously damaging our rehearsal space. This amazing team got back together in 10 days following the storm and considering the hurricane’s impact presented a beautiful (and very expensive) first production of TESLA that was named “BEST NEW WORKS 2017” by South Florida Classical Review. However because of the hurricane’s aftermath, projected ticket sales did not materialize. The result was a complete drain on SoBe Arts, finances causing an unfortunate hiatus in the company’s critical programs.

Please make a donation to SoBe Arts so that we may continue our mission: “ SoBe Arts promotes excellence, creativity, and accessibility of the arts through performance events and world premieres of the highest quality, in music and related artistic disciplines. The Institute is committed to the sustained development of creativity and cultural life in individuals, the region and the nation by advancing artistic talents, regardless of income. A major goal is to cultivate new audiences for the fine arts. “

"Carson Kievman has created a series of music theater works that push the boundaries between opera, dance, drama and spectacle... (T)he music and drama [of TESLA] flow organically and effectively... In an era when recurrent storms and climate change are very much in the news, Tesla's story takes on new relevance” South Florida Classical Review

“(A)n impressive piece, written with commitment and performed and produced with excellence from top to bottom. And it also has a quality that gives the most engaging art its urgency: Relevance" Palm Beach Arts Paper

“The premiere of TESLA - in every sense "against all odds" as Hurricane Irma made its own and almost prevented it - marks a milestone in the composer's career, and a new opera in the panorama that deserved to be considered beyond review and synthesis that seem imperative." Miami Clásica
