Thank you in advance for any support you can provide...sharing this post, words of encouragement, and good vibrations are more than welcome 🥰
THIS is what Bravo was living with for over a week. This fishhook was stuck in his mouth and had pierced his cheek. But he adapted to the pain, he had no choice. There are so many more "Bravos" out there, some with pain we can see and some we can't. We do the best we can but there aren't enough hours, enough food, enough volunteers, and especially not enough money to help them all. Please do the best you can for these amazing animals, donate, share, volunteer.
This is Bravo, one of the toughest cats you'll ever meet. Not because he likes to fight or has a bad attitude, quiet the contrary, he has a girlfriend named Bunny and he rubs on our legs when we serve dinner. He is forced to be tough because he is a homeless colony cat which can present him with unique challenges. If you look closely at the left side of his mouth, you will see a small piece of metal sticking out. It took over a week for us to catch him so a vet could examine him. What they found breaks our hearts...
Working in conjunction with Polacat Animal Rescue we were finally able to catch Dorian and get her the medical treatment she desperately needed!
*** We don't want to show the graphic photos in the main post but will share them in the comments***
Four weeks ago Dorian showed signs of an injury to her chin so we knew we needed help her. Unfortunately, she then vanished for 2 weeks. We feared the worst and resigned ourselves to the fact that we couldn't act quickly enough and had failed her. Sometimes that is our cross to bear in rescue work. But Dory did reappear, sadly in a much more dire condition. It took several days and a variety of trapping techniques but she was finally on the road to relief.
She had a large mass on her chin that had been rapidly growing. We don't know her prognosis just yet but, for now, she is out of pain and recovering in safety.
Please donate to help us in our mission to save all the "Dorians" that we can.

This is the gentleman we call "Tiger Tail"...well, he tries to be a gentleman but sometimes his hormones get the better of him and he loses his manners at the dinner table. He is on our list for neuter, which will make him AND his dinner companions happier!
We're sorry to have been away so long. It's challenging to DO the work AND post about it. But we hope to provide some updates and introductions in the next few days. A large part of our work is helping to care for community cats and we want to share some of the wonderful characters that greet us each time we arrive to feed. Here are a few to start with...
Dewey (left), 007 (right) and Monkey Face (middle). This handsome crew loves to enjoy their dinner on the waterfront watching the sunset. They also seem to enjoy posing for us!
A very unexpected "happily ever after!"
Anyone who has done this work for a while can get cynical, it's kind of an occupational hazard. So it's such a blessing when a hopeless situation ends with an amazing reunion!
A week ago, a new cat appeared in one of our community colonies, a fairly isolated colony in San Pedro. It's situated in such an area that the only way a new cat could get there is by human intervention. It's unfortunate that anyone would "dump" a cat into an area like this; it dangerous, confusing and scary for the cat and could have ended very badly. We suspected that the former owner didn't want her anymore and couldn't be bothered to find a safer avenue by which to rehome her. (unfortunately, cynicism is easy) But fate intervened when this sweetie came right up to us for pets...and food. We had no plan for Peaches/Kiwi right then so we would have to come back the next day, after making arrangements for a foster home. It took 2 days to get her to safety, right before the most recent storm was due to hit!
Surprisingly, we discovered a microchip but, again, we were not hopeful that there would be a smile at the end of this journey. We're delighted to report that Kiwi got out of her home in Lakewood and was being dearly missed by her mom. (the chip actually tracked to another rescue who vouched for the adopter) Kiwi isn't revealing how she journeyed so far away to such a dangerous area, kitties like to keep secrets you know, but she is safely back at home with her family and kitty sister.
* Chip your pets! *
With a heavy heart we have to share the sad news that Saint Nicholas left us today. He had too many issues for us to be able to help him. But he did feel warmth and relief for a little while before he crossed. Although we only knew him a short while, we will never forget our Christmas morning rescue.
Because rescue work never takes a holiday...meet Saint Nicholas. We first saw him on Christmas Eve, but couldn't catch him, so first thing on Christmas morning we went back with more of our trapping equipment and a resolve not to leave without him. We found him sound asleep on a cold rock and scooped him up! The poor guy is obviously suffering from mange and infected eyes but he is currently at the vet getting the help he needs. Please send good thoughts to our Little Saint Nick!
Success! After many weeks, we finally caught this angel, who was breaking our hearts. Hawaii was suffering from a pellet that was lodged in her hip, along with some intestinal parasites that were making life even more challenging. She is now recovering in the safety of a warm home with lots of love.
This Giving Tuesday, please consider supporting our work in honor of your pet, in memory of an animal that changed your life or in honor of a community cat that you feed. Every action each one of us takes joins us together in the same mission, protecting and caring for all the beautiful creatures that share our lives.
"GOT SHOES?" ***Fundraiser Collection Update***
We are working in conjunction with Funds2Orgs by collecting gently worn used shoes (and new shoes.) For every 2500 pairs of shoes, we will receive $1000! Not only do you help us, but the shoes also get a second life with those in need.
We hope to collect 5000 pairs, to double the donation, so every pair helps!
See below for a list of collection sites. If you can't make it to one of them, please reach out to us and we will do our best to come to you.
Additionally, if you'd like to do your own mini-collection event or student project, we can supply you with fliers and a collection box.

Our partner organization, POLACAT, is having a fundraiser this week to help our sweet Lavender. If you're in the San Pedro area on Thursday, July 28th, stop in at the The Whale & Ale for a pint and some chips and support Lavender's recovery.

I find it hard to ask for help, but the universe is trying to make me see that we all have to lean on one another. Of course I already know that, but doing it is a different deal! My passion for helping animals led me to create this rescue group a few years ago but the needs of so many have recently become overwhelming and we may have to curtail our efforts until our donations increase. It's hard to say no to any of the desperate faces we see, but that is the hard reality sometimes. I hate to think of others out there like Batman who was shot with a pellet gun or Lavender, who's birth defect threatened his life. I know we can't save them all, but we want to save MORE!
If you are able, I ask you do donate any amount. Please also share this post, as our following is currently pretty small.

I am so fortunate to have a few wonderful volunteers dedicating their time an energy to this journey with me but we need so much more help. If you are interested in sharing your time, please reach out to me. We can use help caring for our community cat colonies, fostering kittens and adults, socializing kitties, doing some record keeping and of course fundraising. If you have any talent or skill that you'd like to donate, we would love to hear from you.
Very sincerely,
Jeanne
We received some very distressing news about our sweet Batman today. He had his first evaluation by our vet, since we caught him a couple of days ago, and it was discovered that he had been shot with a pellet gun and has a shattered pellet lodged in his head.
We've been doing this work for years and know the unfortunate truth about the dangers that community cats face on the streets, but an image like this is just heartbreaking.
We are awaiting further diagnostics to see if there are any options to help him. For now, he is comfortable and receiving lots of love. Apparently, even Batman can use a few prayers.
Apparently, skunks do NOT like to share! We don't just see cats in our colonies!
Pure relaxation and bliss! Thank you Gina Lumbruno for the care and love you're giving our Batman. He obviously feels safe 🥰
As we find so often, some cats from community cat colonies turn out to be love bugs 🥰 This is what Batman did as we gave him sub-q fluids. He's going to steal all the hearts!
Thanks to our dedicated rescue partner and experienced trapper Courtney Piscitelli Bowen we were able to get Batman off the street and safe! This journey has taken many weeks but we can now take the next step to addressing Batman's medical issues.
Lavender, taking a little break from "cone prison" to enjoy some lunch.
We really need some support to help with our veterinary expenses. Fortunately, little Lavender is doing really well, but we will be limited in helping others right now due to the expenses we incurred. Please donate, if you can, and share our page.

Healing Heart Haven for Animals Healing Heart Haven for Animals is a 501(c)(3) animal rescue, located in Southern California, focused on giving cats and dogs the medical care, shelter, love, and time they need to find their forever homes. Many of our furry ones have faced challenges on their road to adoption, but we are committed....
Lavender was released last night and so happy to be back in his foster home! Sleep well little angel.
"Am I really going home?!"
"GOT SHOES?"
We're excited about this fundraiser because you don't have to buy ANYTHING! We're collecting gently worn, used and new shoes to raise funds for our animals. Not only do you help us, but the shoes also get a second life with those in need. It's a double donation!
If you live in Southern California, start cleaning out those closets and stay tuned for information about where you can drop off your shoes.
We hope to get Lavender home to his foster family and stepdad, Sydney, soon.
This is sweet Lavender on the way to the ER having so much trouble breathing.
