Quake Studio

Quake Studio is a one-of-kind design and art studio that is re-imagining preconceived ideas of the Pacific Northwest.

Our refined art pieces are inspired by nature, developed in collaborations and rooted in our founder, Lisa Turner's creative vision. Quake Furniture, created in 2013 and founded by artist and designer Lisa Turner, is a collection that synthesizes industrial design and sculptural drawings upon the materials of the Pacific Northwest. With discriminating attention to detail each piece blends the influence of the environment with contemporary aesthetics.

Thank you

To Western Living Magazine for honouring my work by nominating us as a finalist in Maker of the Year 2023.
I’ve loved this magazine for decades.
As a high school kid I loved the articles and insights into western Canadian homes, design trends unique to the northwest and scoping out interesting businesses catering to making spaces more attractive.
As an interior designer Western Living was an added resource to our office for both sharing possibilities to our clients and celebrating the best of the west!
Now, as an artist, it is truly a wow moment to be a finalist in the maker category!
Thank you to my fellow artisans, my clients and Provide Home for showcasing my work.

It’s time to head outside. Our aluminum quake tables make delightful additions to any patio or outdoor space. We also love they are perfect to sit on around the fire pit!

“Symbiosis is nature’s reciprocity”

Isolation is not a natural state.
My work is dependent on the talent, generosity and technical expertise of others.
I am so grateful for this place and the people of this community that have helped realize this project but also the many endeavours of the past. For this project the talent of Kelly, artisan blacksmith, Tyler and Jesse of Goodbeasts glass studio, Ruby, artist and bookmaker and a special shout out to Gillian who was my assistant for the last 2.5 years, who brought structure, thoughtfulness and professionalism to my practice.
Last but not least are the photographic talents of Noah, Patt and Larry who literally brought their unique lens to the project.

Sand is the food of glass”

Being an artist is a state of being. It’s a state of thinking and experiencing the world.

Nature is the food for my creative process.

Glass is one of the oldest human made materials, and I wonder at the genius of those before me that could take the simplest material and create such beauty and function.

This project allowed me to work with two wonderful artists, Tyler and Jesse, .ca to witness their love and passion for this ancient process.

Love for design, for community, for creativity and for beauty.
David Keeler of Provide Home Gallery is all of that and more. David, along with his late husband, Robert, created a unique space in the ecosystem of Vancouver’s design community.
Curated products that bring the best of the world’s homewares alongside innovative products created by our vibrant local design community.
I am over the moon honoured to be represented by Provide Home!
From Provide showcasing my first felt drawings, the representation of my furniture pieces, the celebration of my PoLite candlesticks (now sold out) to my latest creations, a limited series of unique glass and steel sculptures.
I hope you can join us, or at least come and visit both locations in the Armoury District at Fir and 2nd Avenue in Vancouver.

“Pulsating, floating, free of thought, the jellyfish dances.”

I have had more time to ponder, contemplate and find solitude in nature. The space that was created was sometimes scary and other times restorative.
The beauty of that time was the acknowledgment of how much I needed to create as ideas were germinating in my mind. These sculptures are part of that process. It is so fulfilling to conceive of an idea, play with it and then have the support of fellow artisans to come on board and manifest the vision.

“Sticks and stones offer shelter from the storm”

Usually, while out walking, I listen to philosophy and poetry podcasts to spark my creativity. When I come home, settle in, I will write on my iPad or in a journal. Sometimes the thoughts relate to work, sometimes the thoughts allow me to express difficult emotions.
One incredibly meaningful philosopher/poet was the late John O’Donohue.
His wisdom on speaking of how the Irish landscape brought deep awareness and meaning into his life, awakened me to my own roots and history in the Pacific Northwest. If you get a chance check out his website, run by his family and dear friends.

“Waves wash, rocks tumble, the moon makes its journey across the sky”

The sound of waves is comforting, day or night.
The rhythm of nature ebbs and flows both visually and sonically, regardless of the irritations and anxieties of the day.
I feel that the best way to understand the chaos of the world around me is to create visual images or forms. Sometimes, if feels like the forms create themselves.
When the work is realized, I begin to see the connections to what I had been contemplating.

My work often starts kinetically. I see something in the landscape or seascape that resonates.
I remind myself to play with the ideas, build machetes, sketch and draw whimsical thoughts.
I often love the process but am disappointed with my initial outcome.
But, if I can see the concept, almost feel it and then I feel confident enough to begin the collaboration process.

“Hola”

It’s an incredible privilege and honour to have our locally designed and made pieces be represented in Canadian embassies and consulates around the world.

Super excited that two of our Locarno Tables will be finding a new home in Guatemala thanks to the talented team of designers that work for Global Affairs.

This image shows a little of what goes on behind the surface of our work!
