We basically know two things about its origins: 1. Schizophrenia cannot be explained by bad parenting. 2. There is a very strong genetic componen...

I noticed recently that someone on Amazon gave my memoir a negative review because they thought I was exaggerating and blaming the "system" for my son's mental illness. And that might even be a more common response from people who don't say anything but still believe that things couldn't be as bad as they are with the current state of the mental healthcare system.

And what else is new? Some of the Board and Cares mentioned in this article I visited when searching for places for my son to live prior to 2016.

For someone who is not directly involved with the mental health care system, Styx has a spot on grasp of what is wrong with the system now, what has taken place historically in the U.S. and what needs to change. It's refreshing to see someone so informed on a subject that does not affect them directly. Ultimately, however, a broken mental healthcare system affects all of society and reduces the quality of life for everyone, including family members of those with mental illness and those who lost a loved one due to a violent mentally ill person, much of which is preventable.
