🀰🏻 I know, that's how we grew up, watching births on TV with women lying down with legs open. Who said that opening your legs makes it easier for the baby to come out?

Remember: The farther the knees move away (external rotation of the thighs), the more the exit of the pelvis closes. πŸ€—

Today is National Rainbow Baby Day, a day to acknowledge the child or children born after a baby that has died during pregnancy, birth, or early life. It is a day to honor the baby that brings such joy after the deep grief of loss; and to acknowledge the beauty that we see ever more clearly after enduring such heartbreak.

While we understand that not everyone connects with this term, or has the opportunity to carry a child after a loss, for those who do grow their family after losing a baby, it can be a powerful term and image. For those of you holding your rainbow babies in your arms, we are thinking of you and your tremendous journey. For those of you dreaming of having another child, or dreaming of being ready to try again, we are thinking of you with hope in our hearts.

It is truly a wonderful, beautiful mystery how much love the heart can hold.

Here is a highlight video of the latest birth I had the honor to serve at along side Midwife April from Natural Design Midwifery. A beautiful water birth at home and my first water birth. This was 3 years to the day from when I completed my doula training.

It’s been such an honor and a blessing to have served so many families during such an intimate and special time in their lives. I have learned so much about birth, life and myself along the way. I am eternally grateful for the last three years as a doula. πŸ’œ

The Why

My passion for birth was sparked a little over 5 years ago with the birth of my first son. I really enjoyed every stage of my pregnancy and my birth experience was incredible. I had an awesome birth team that made me feel respected and empowered. Two years later I became pregnant again and chose to have my 2nd son exactly the same way as the first, naturally and surrounded by love in the comfort of my own home. This led to having several friends and acquaintances ask me how I did it. As I would speak to them about my own experiences, I felt a passion grow within me to empower and support other women. I found tremendous joy in knowing that my experience could help someone else.

I didn’t exactly know what a birth doula was until after my second son was born in 2015. As I shared my birth experiences with others, some would say to me that I should become a doula. I had a passion for speaking to other women about birth and I found purpose in empowering and supporting them. It was in early 2018 that I knew that I was called to do just that by becoming a birth doula.
