Introducing the first of three language/culture classes of the semester...Macedonian!
Macedonia is a small, mountainous country in the very center of the Balkan peninsula. Being rich in fertile lands, water sources and various metal and mineral mines, it has always been a place that European and Minor Asian emperors wanted to rule. Inhabited since the earliest times, civilizations grew and fall, while Macedonia was enriching its cultural heritage from the mosaics of ancient Macedonians, temples of the Romans, Byzantine churches and monasteries, Ottoman mosques and hamams, to socialist brutalist architecture. Today, as a young independent state, Macedonia aspires to become a member of the European Union and the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization, while struggling to keep its identity and unique culture under pressure from near and far alike.

Want a relaxing way to end Friday afternoons this semester? Come to Bulgarian from 3-4:30 p.m. in J. Walter Wilson 401!
“Vhaz-rah-zdha-ne” is our Bulgarian fellow Viktoria’s favorite word in Bulgarian because of its deep national and cultural significance. Fun fact: the word means “existential rebirth” and is connected with Bulgaria’s liberation movement in the 19th century after 500 years of Ottoman oppression.
Even more good news: The CLS will be offering non-credit intro Kiswahili starting Feb 3rd. The class will meet twice a week, TU/THU 4:30-5:50 in our conference room 202 taught by their Fullbright Joyce. Don't be too shy to show up to the next class!
Exciting news!! The locations have been set for Spring 2015 languages. Bengali will meet in Wilson 104 on Mondays from 4-5:30 p.m.
We asked our amazing Bengali fellow Supriya about her favorite word in Bengali. Her answer?
“Adda”, meaning chats among people. This is typical only in West Bengal where people share chats over tea, drinks, smokes, snacks etc in the evenings. I have grown up engaging in “addas” with my friends and family and they have been the source of joy and learning through the years.
Happy 2015 everyone!!! Interested in learning more about our increasingly global world? Come join us this spring for exciting introductions to five amazing languages: Bengali, Bulgarian, Finnish, Shona, and Thai! One course offered each day of the week M-F.
