We are so sorry to share the news of Katherine Young’s passing. Katherine was the beloved choral director at Smithfield High School and a friend of RICC. Our deepest condolences and prayers are with her family.

It is with heavy, heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved teacher, colleague and friend Katherine Young. Her fierce and passionate dedication to the SHS community will never be forgotten. Her smile shone brightly. May her legacy live on through the lives of those she has touched.

For our school community, counselors will be available today, Saturday, from 3:00pm - 4:00pm and tomorrow, Sunday, from 12:00pm - 2:00pm, as well as in school throughout the week for students, faculty and staff.

Thank you, Katherine, for making our world a better place. ❤️

IMPORTANT CELL PHONE PRIVACY UPDATE:

If you have an iPhone and have done the recent iOS 17 update, they have set a new feature called NameDrop defaulted to ON. This feature allows the sharing of your contact info just by bringing your phones close together. To shut this off go to Settings, General, AirDrop, Bringing Devices Together. Change to OFF.

PARENTS: Don’t forget to change these settings after the update on your children’s phones, also, to help keep them safe as well!

The Rhode Island Children's Chorus (Lyric Chorus) was honored to perform at the Annual Gala for the The Izzy Foundation last weekend. This organization is devoted to helping children with cancer and their families, and we are grateful to be a part of such a meaningful event.

Last night, the Rhode Island Children’s Chorus (Year 2+ Lyric Chorus students) performed at the annual gala for the The Izzy Foundation. We love the Izzy Foundation and were deeply “Izspired” to receive an Izzy award. Channel 12 offered brief coverage:

13 years ago, Gavin Gillooly joined the RI Children's Chorus as a first grader. He remained a member of RICC for all twelve years of school, never missing a concert. Gavin is now a freshman at Rhode Island College, majoring in music education, and yesterday was his first day as a staff member with RI Children's Chorus. We couldn't be more proud of Gavin for his dedication, work ethic, and the wonderful person he has become. We still remember his very first audition, and it brings us joy to see him in a leadership role. Go Gavin!

As our organization expands, our staff does the same. 18 staff members, plus a team of volunteers eagerly await Opening Day! We can't wait to see our returning students and welcome new members. Season 21 is just around the corner!

Meet ANGELA MITSUMA, co-conductor of the Training Chorus (East Greenwich location)!

Angela Mitsuma graduated with a B.A. in Music Education with an English minor from Providence College, where she studied voice and classical guitar. There, she earned the Highest in Major Award and the Reverend Leo S. Cannon, O.P. Award for excellent musicianship. Since joining as a student, this will be Angela’s seventh year with the RI Children's Chorus and her fourth with the Providence Singers. When she’s not in choir or playing guitar, Angela performs as a professional cantor for the St. Francis and St. Dominic parishes in Swansea, MA. Angela also has a love for the sciences and has conducted pandemic management work for the Philippines and Parkinson's disease research through the Austriaco lab. She hopes to one day combine her interests and classroom experience to conduct neuromusical research to advocate for music education. Angela is thrilled to join the RICC teaching staff, co-conducting the East Greenwich Training Chorus with Shaylyn White. Dr. Noel will also continue her work with the EG Training Chorus and with all seven RICC classes.

We celebrated 20 years of the Rhode Island Children's Chorus at this weekend's spring concert programs of the Lyric, Training, and High School Honor Choirs.

There was so much joy, love, and energy on the stage (and in the audience)! Thank you to our incredible staff for their care of the children and for helping to make our season a success, and to all of the parents and family members who understand and value what we do, which is so much more than just the music.
