I’m proud to announce that this summer I will serve for the first time on the Jazz Faculty for the center. There are 3 weeks of jazz camps to choose to attend, I’ll be there for Week 2 & would love to see you there!

Camps:
Jazz Ensemble Camp Week I: Jun 16 - 21
Jazz Ensemble Camp Week II: Jun 23 - 28
Jazz Combo Camp: Jun 30 - Jul 5

As you you’ll hear it described in New Orleans, by Miles Davis & other artists, I prefer to call “jazz” Social Music and, in that spirit, the camps are a great place to meet and play with other young musicians from MN, WI, and beyond.

The faculty is made up of professional jazz musicians and educators who are dedicated to helping students reach their full potential as young jazz musicians. Daily, students will get instrument-specific masterclasses from faculty, rehearse in ensembles, and attend improvisation/theory classes as well as jazz listening classes.

If you’re a young rhythm section player or horn player sign up, join us & invite your friends! Playing soulful, improvised music with great arrangements together in an ensemble is one of the greatest experiences you can share & enjoy together.

My thanks to my friend and program director for the invitation. If you are interested in more details on the camps, please let me know or contact !!

“For more than 55 years, the Master Teachers of the Shell Lake Arts Center Jazz Camps have launched the careers for some of America’s most acclaimed young jazz musicians: Ethan Iverson (The Bad Plus), Geoff Keezer (Art Blakey, David Sanborn), Lyle Mays (Pat Metheny Group), Bill Evans Saxophone (Miles Davis, Randy Brecker), Trumpeter Byron Stripling (Count Basie, Woody Herman).”

I love working with the glorious who put on two concerts yesterday.

I did not perform this time around, but was invited to engage with the two youngest choirs between concerts to share some knowledge on how (w/respect to Efrain Toro) Everything is Rhythm, Rhythm is Everything & Everything is A Drum.

These young people blew my mind with insight that was way ahead of what I expected, what a blast!

Special thanks to Audrey Riddle for her support & Elizabeth Hainlen for her assistance! 🪘🎵☀️🎵🪘

We’re celebrating Max Roach’s 100th birthday today — and so should you. In the world of jazz, few names resonate as powerfully as Max Roach. A legendary drummer, composer, and bandleader, Roach was a key player of the bebop era of the 1940s and ’50s and is largely credited for elevating the role of the drummer from timekeeper and accompanist to an equal partner in the collective improvisations of modern jazz. Roach also established a new standard of sophistication for solo drumset compositions (Drums Unlimited), and his commitment to social justice (We Insist! Freedom Now Suite) made him a true pioneer of modern art.

Here’s a few ways to celebrate:
Everyone - Enjoy this Max Roach playlist and track-by-track rundown by Dave Stanoch and the PAS Drumset Committee on the PAS Blog at bit.ly/maxroach100

PAS Members - Keep an eye on your email later this week for something special from Jazz at Lincoln Center for their Max Roach Centennial concert, in-person or online, January 19-20, featuring music direction by Obed Calvaire.

Alright, people—Bring It In!!!🫂
And why not? Listen, I believe in the power of my instrument to move people & lift their spirits. I believe in the power of the positive vibration & right now we need it more than ever.

Art Blakey said “Music washes away the dust of everyday life”—I’m about that. Entertainment? Yes, but deeper —I use my instrument to foster communication, healing & understanding.

Max Roach said “We sometimes use music as a weapon against man’s inhumanity to man.” I’m about that, too.

I will use my drums to rage against hate as well as spread love. It’s not about licks or likes, it’s about communication, connection & community.

They key to being a great musician is to listen. We need more of that to tell a better story for a better world.

So, yes, please Hug A Drummer today. And each other. 🫂 Sending Love to my Brethren & to all of you.
As one drummer once said, “Peace and Love.” ❤️🥁❤️

It’s a very sad day in our community with the news of the passing of Dom Famularo, after fighting against cancer so well. A tough battle we all hoped he would win. There’s a lot to say about the doors Dom opened for me, like SO many others, and the fun we had. But for now, my heart goes out to his family and all of us in the community who loved him. His passing is a great loss, but I also believe that Dom’s spirit was larger than life in the first place and that he has moved, in his own words, Onward and Upward and I know we will all celebrate his legacy forever. Love you, Dom, and we will miss you terribly. Say hi to Elliot & Vic and may your spirit soar free. Thank you, Dom. Always. 💔🙏🥁🎵💙

I just received word this morning that Richard Davis passed away yesterday at 93. I will have much more to say later about this great man and renowned bassist who was like a second father to me, took me under his wing, and helped me discover who I am.

It has already been a blessing this morning to share remembrances of him with so many friends with whom he was our nexus.

I love you, Richard. May your spirit soar free. 💔🩵🙏

I’m proud to see the digital edition of my book, Mastering the Tables of Time, being featured this week by .
Rob Wallis & his whole team are fantastic, incredibly supportive & the digital edition is a very convenient resource. Shout out to who designed the digital edition cover & also who helped me get the book on the air digitally.
It’s interesting, it’s not like I have a ton of followers on social media, I’ve never quite gotten the hang of pushing myself on the web, yet the book remains a bestseller - in digital & also the original print edition, distributed by . For me, that’s a fine trade-off. I’m really too busy performing & teaching to do a lot of hype & I’m not super comfortable with it, anyway, I guess.
The thing is, I just love to play. If you asked me why I became a drummer, I honestly don’t know the answer. I’m just drawn to & it works for me. It always has & it affords me time to spend in the company of incredibly talented people all over the world.
I also love to teach. I had incredible teachers who gave me their time. The only thing they ever asked of me was to pass it on. My book is a big part of my teaching as well, but here’s the thing…
The best thing a drummer can do to get better at playing music is to play music with other people. You can’t get that kind of experience from a book or a video. But in order to play well, you need to have a strong foundation & I think my book remains popular because it focuses on an important way to build & advance that foundation creatively — an approach that honors the influence of my first teacher, Elliot Fine.

For me, everyday is a new opportunity to explore and grow as a musician. In my work, I’m learning and performing new music every single week with a wonderful variety of amazing musicians. That’s what all the practicing is for. I dig making music with other musicians. I can play by myself all day and that’s fun, but it’s nothing like listening to other players and creating something in the moment that doesn’t exist unless you’re actually doing it together.

In my teaching, I work hard together with my students to unlock the doors that help them find their path and similar results based on their own personal goals. I make a promise to each and every student that they will leave every lesson farther ahead of where they were when they arrived, and I stand by that promise.

What are you looking for? As we transition from summer to fall I have a few openings in my teaching schedule so, if you’ve been curious, now is the time.

Let’s find the groove together that will help you not only reach but surpass your goals. There’s nothing better!

What a pleasure it was to spend last week as part of the guest faculty for the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Drumset Camp, presented by , organized by our host, Miss Sheila Klotz

Along w/fellow instructors
Aaron Bertoglio, Alex Cohen, Willie Howell, Greyson Nekrutman,
& Miss Sheila, we worked daily w/ 40 students divided into five different groups.

It was Big Fun to work with all the wonderful and talented students & I always enjoy checking out & learning from what my peers are into, drumming-wise, at events like this as well! It was a fun hang!

A big shout out to all my families whose instruments and equipment I proudly endorse who went all out, above & beyond to provide giveaway prizes for the students that were just fantastic & greatly appreciated!

Thank you always to Yamaha Drums, Remo, Vic Firth, Prologix, Alfred Misic, Hudson Music & a special thank you to Paiste Cymbals & especially Tim Shahady, who came to the event with a jeep full of PAISTE Cymbals for the students to all check out as part of a special clinic he & I presented, giving tips for cymbal selection.

If you are or know a young drummer between the ages of 9 to 22 who would enjoy an opportunity like this in 2024, contact. Somardrummers - I highly recommend it!

PSA to all my fellow musician / edu friends: I shot this pic because I’m stoked to be prepping for the Mid-Atlantic Drum Camp coming up next month - which is going to be great fun - but I, unfortunately, got sidelined by a jiveass corporate bait & switch that I got suckered into at the store I decided to swing into on my way home from this morning’s gig to save me a little time in getting these copies made.

Homie behind the counter at the store told me the main floor copy machine didn’t staple so he could take care of that behind the counter for a total of $2.50 - cool. I get the bill for 41 copies/287 pieces of paper and this is my bill - $193.25?!

Oh - Homie didn’t tell me ahead of time about the “priority printing” charge (because I had over 100 pieces of paper?) before I was paying the bill… “What’s this charge?” I asked him. “Oh, I was just going to explain that to you.”

Wow, FedEx - that’s some underhandedly devious business practice right there.

So, I’ve learned my lesson, and I can write this off, but I’m calling you out FedEx. That’s some BS right there and I’m warning all my friends because I work hard for every dollar I earn and I’m not living some kind of bourgeois lifestyle so here’s a notice to you in a warning for all my friends:

I’m done with you. They don’t pull this kind of crap at the store where I have my business P.O.

And so my friends, if you’re heading out to copy your charts or your lesson materials, stay away from the Wizard of Oz behind the counter at FedEx, located on the low road of your GPS.

Are you, as George Clinton would say, “Up for the Downstroke?” Playing with fluid motion improves our feel because rhythm is all around us.
Consider this: Our downstrokes create the sounds we produce but our upstrokes control the time. Like a dancer, this skill and focus helps us hold our tempos together - fast and, especially, slow. Everything is Rhythm. How’s your flow?

Yesterday, June 16th, 2023, I was on the road so I wanted today to wish a very Happy 90th Birthday to Walfredo del los Reyes, Senior.
An icon in the world of music & an innovator in the realm of Percussion. When you listen to Walfredo play he takes you from the Depths of Mother Earth into the Great Beyond. He is connected to the Vibrations of the Universe with that rare gift not often heard - so listen to him!!!
A father figure, mentor, fast friend & partner in crime. Some of the happiest days of my life have been spent overlooking Oakland in the home of Debbie & Walfredo Reyes. Thank you both. I Love You forever. Happy Birthday to the King! And one more thing I know you would want me to say: “ELLIOT FINE!”

Remembering the great Vic Firth, whose birthday was June 2nd. This letter he sent me after the release of my book was the game-changer for my career. He opened doors for me that changed my life. He was one of a kind. So warm, wise, talented, insightful, and wickedly funny. We all miss him terribly but his impact will last forever. The other photos are wonderful memories of moments that are priceless. Thanks, Vic. “Perseverance.”

Welcome!

My approach to teaching music on the drumset is based on a process of illumination. I want my students to understand not only how playing the instrument works but why things do or don’t work and what choices best serve the music you are playing. I want them to end every lesson ahead in their abilities from where they were at the beginning.

Music is my passion and also my vocation. I’ve been fortunate to study myself with some legendary drumset artists and have years of performance experience. It all informs my approach as an educator. I believe that the ultimate goal as players is to ”tell our own story,” isn’t it? What is your story today and what do you want it to be tomorrow?

So many of my former students have gone on to exciting careers in music. You can find some performing with artists like Ice T, Mint Condition, Trace Adkins, Scooter Jennings, After the Burial, Aegean, Scale the Summit, Anthony Cox, Acoustic Alchemy, Cloud Cult, Wookiefoot, Mickey Hart and even the Barnum & Bailey Circus! Several others have authored their own drum method books, write for Modern Drummer, DRUM!, and Drumhead Magazines, and teach at Musicians Institute and School of Rock. One owns his own school in Iceland and another one even invented the Quiztone app!

I am here for YOU! Feel free to contact me. I am available locally and globally, both onsite and online. What are your goals? Let me answer your questions and inspire you to move closer to them than ever before. We’ll have fun working hard together doing something we both love. What could be better?
