WHO ARE THESE BRAVE NEPALI ADVENTURERS?
In April 2011 Sano Babu Sunuwar and Lakpa Tsheri Sherpa began their three-month quest for the Ultimate Descent. They planned to climb Mount Everest, paraglide down, then kayak to the Indian Ocean.
Here Babu and Lakpa trek along the Western Cwm, a U-shaped valley carved out by the Khumbu Glacier. Set between Camps 1 and 2 at around 22,000 feet, this area is littered with giant crevasses. Lakpa, a mountaineering guide, pushed Babu, a professional kayaker, to learn quickly. They didn't stay at Camp 1, deciding to push on to Camp 2 instead.
With nearly 72,000 votes, Sano Babu Sunuwar and Lakpa Tsheri Sherpa are the 2012 National Geographic People's Choice Adventurers of the Year. Their Ultimate Descent expedition to climb Everest, paraglide down, and paddle to the sea truly embodies the spirit of adventure. With borrowed gear and a bare-bones budget, there were no corporate sponsors nor social media campaigns, just the essentials for adventure—vision, creativity, and friendship.
After 10 days of intensive searching, we have had to make the difficult decision to scale back the search for Charlie Kelly.
It is still very much our aim to bring Charlie back to his family. GMR and other teams will continue to search on a part-time basis as and when the weather allows, and volunteers have time between work and family commitments.
The search has covered a massive arrea of intricate terrain, but there has been no trace of Charlie since his rucksack was found on Saturday the 9th. The search so far has involved helicopters, dogs, drones, and 10 different mountain rescue teams, including civilian, RAF, and Police MRT.
However, if new evidence comes to light providing a focused area to search, the response may be stepped up again. To that end, we are asking once more for people to think back to the 6th, 7th, and 8th of September. Were you at Glencoe Mountain Resort,
- Meall a Bhuirdh or suronding hills - Creise, Clach Leathad, Beinn Mhic Chasgaig, or possibly you may have seen him in Glen Etive? If you were there, please check back through your photos of the day. Was there someone in the background of your summit selfie? Also, we would like to hear from anyone who has found a pile of orange peel on the hill in this area, we know Charlie had two with him, but there was no peel in his bag. This may help us work out his route.
Charlie is believed to be wearing a black waterproof jacket, grey trousers and a dark green fleece, he was last seen with a pair of walking poles. Charlie is described as having a distinctive unusual gait due to a hip problem and may have been moving slowly.
Please help us bring Charlie home by sharing among your hill going friends.

If you’re anything like this typical group of local riders of varying resolution I met in the forest earlier… you may have questions.
What’s a Hamsterley Beast?
Why should I have anything to do with it?
What if I’m not fit enough?
I’ve got an e-bike?
If it’s not enduro… I don’t go.
Why pay to ride somewhere I can go for free?
The Hamsterley Beast is a MTB challenge ride open to riders of all technical ability on almost any type of bike. There are two ride options, a 20 mile half Beast and the full fat 40 miler. It takes place in and around Hamsterley Forest over a range of different terrain, from lovely man made trails to sweet natural single track. It has punishing climbs and delicious rewards. It’s like a big day out on your bike with a huge group of friends. I’ve ridden the event on the day myself and had one of the funniest and challenging days on my bike ever. So many people helping each other along and having a great time brought a genuine tear to my eye. It’s magic!
You should totally do it. For the experience, for the banter, for the bragging rights and most importantly, to help raise funds for an extremely worthy cause in GNAAS. A service we all hope none of us or our loved ones ever need, but one which we are all incredibly grateful to have on standby. GNAAS cannot operate without the help of people like us… you and me.
You are fit enough. It wouldn’t be a challenge if you weren’t pushing yourself would it? It’s the Hamsterley Beast, not the Gruffalos picnic. Bring your squad, make a new squad on the day, dig deep and get each other through.
E-bikes are welcome here. It’s still not going to be easy.
No it’s not enduro. Sometimes things aren’t. It’s ok though, you’ll still enjoy yourself. There’s lots and lots of trails to ride and you can go as fast as you like.
Times are hard what with cost of living and so on so it’s hard to prioritise a day out on your bike. We have put together a whole weekend for you at a VERY competitive price (look around) with no extra costs incurred by you once you sign up. What’s more, everything we make after costs goes to charity.
We are not in this to get rich or to take as much money out of your pocket as we can
