The strength of the upper trapezius muscle is important. But for the sake of minimizing injury risk, and strength imbalances in the body, the lower trapezius should also be addressed. The lower “traps” are important for scapular depression and control. With this prone exercise, we strengthen the upper, middle, and lower trapezius a bit more evenly, activating the lower fibers more than we normally would in other workout programs.
In other words, this exercise helps with strengthening the shoulder blade by keeping it lower, not elevated and sticking out of the back so much.
