Let’s talk about promoting art, shall we?

For creatives like me (low financial budget, insecure, perfectionistic, highly demanding concerning quality, etc), it is a pain in the ass when it comes to showing yourself regularly on social platforms. Yet, I know it’s the only way to let people know there’s SOMETHING NEW (see what I did there? 🤪) coming up. I don't do gigs (i.e. playing my own music; as a freelance drummer, I do play live occasionally), so social platforms are a necessary evil to show myself.

Another reason for stepping on the barricades to promote my art is that I also want to give credit to all the wonderful people who participated in the making of my creations. As I stated several times before, I could not have done it without ‘em.

If I were totally honest with you, I wouldn't do any of these promotional activities (I’d rather crawl under a blanket before and after releasing my music), but I also know that without these posts, no one would ever know I create and release music, right?

I don't consider myself a drummer with lots of chops and technical skills. That’s why you hardly see me doing any drum solos. Besides, in my opinion, drum solos aren’t that interesting to listen to (with very few exceptions). Secondly, there are so many much greater colleagues than me in that area.

However, back then, when I was thinking about the compilation of songs for my debut album, I thought it would be fun to record one song that had a drum solo over a vamp (which is a repeated chord progression and/or rhythmic figure where soloists can do their thàng 😉). In my opinion, it’s the most interesting kind of drum solo (and maybe the hardest thing as well) since the feature is part of the song and not a stand-alone “Look-how-many-chops-I-can-play-in-just-one-bar”-drum solo. As a result, SOMETHING NEW happened. I think I might leave it to this one-time event. It’s up to you whether or not I have succeeded.

As musicians, do we have the task of showing critical engagement and taking a stand for what’s happening in the world? I ask myself that question a lot these days.

When I write lyrics, I always try to be positive, staying away from describing love relations, and rather focusing on universal love. But is it enough? It feels pointless at times. Although I try to be hopeful and stay faithful to the world we’re living in, I confess it's a challenge for me at times, to say the least.

As artists, where do our obligations and responsibilities lie?

As artists, are we here for entertaining purposes only or is there more to offer?

Maybe I’m overthinking it. I guess I am. 🤯

Does anyone care to share some personal thoughts on this one?

What’s my new single SOMETHING NEW all about?

Well, although it’s easier said than done, I think it’s time we try something new (hence the title. Clever, eh? 😜 ). We’re in a crazy place right now (at least, that’s what I sense. Anyone with me?).

Maybe we should honor and celebrate life more, instead of destroying it. Maybe we should focus on love instead of fear.
And yes, it might be not easy. It has to be practiced every day. Over and over again. It all starts with ourselves.

So there you go. My tune might help you to focus on choosing Love and be thankful for what you have.

Am I outdated?

Some will say my upcoming single SOMETHING NEW is a protest song. Considering the recent events, I can't argue with that. Especially since the elections yesterday in the Netherlands, my homeland 😭 (for those who missed it: it seems we get our own Dutch Donald Trump as a prime minister… Still can’t believe it. To tell you the truth: right now I feel ashamed to be a Dutch resident, especially towards those who have non-white skin, and a non-European religion).

However, when I wrote this song, it was meant to be an ode to celebrate life. The lyrics are all about the question: what if we put all things to an end and start over again? What if we got the chance to let go of all fear and hate and choose love instead?

More than ever it is our obligation to the world to be hopeful, share kindness, and look out for each other. Even if it looks like everything is lost.

I feel a bit naked.

The people who have been following me for a while might know that every single I released thus far has come with a music video. Not this time. So that’s one of the (many) reasons I feel quite insecure about it. On the other hand, I see a lot of my colleagues doing it every time they release a single. So why shouldn't I try it and give it a go?

I prefer to accompany my music with moving images, tho. I love to share how beautifully all the musicians played. How everybody gave their hearts and souls. The behind-the-scenes footage. The Energy. Truth is, all the footage we’ve recorded during the recording sessions has been deleted by mistake. 😫 Ouch. My fault, nobody else's. I was under the impression I had made a backup on an external drive when I pushed the delete button to make space on the internal hard drive. Wrong. Well, I DID get space. In my head. Which immediately was filled with a HUGE headache. Dàngggg. I even invested in expensive data recovery software. But alas…

Anyway, what’s remained is the music (thank God). That’s the most important thing, right?

Can you keep a li’l secret?

I’ve never released a song that’s been recorded that long ago. It’s been more than 5 years (!) since we worked on my new single SOMETHING NEW. Imagine that. And you know what’s funny? That makes it easier to let things go in terms of whether or not the tune will be a “success” (whatever that may be).

Crazy, right? I guess it's because I’ve forgotten the blood, sweat, and tears that we’ve put into it. Feeling less attached to it certainly saves some -not all of it- stress releasing this baby. At least up until now… It makes the whole ride a tiny bit more enjoyable! 😊

One of the hardest things about releasing a new single is the ‘letting go’ phase. I think many creatives can relate. As long as I am in the studio, it’s playtime! When the recordings are done, and the mixing of the music begins, the first doubts start to grow: Will the mix sound like I have envisioned? What if we missed something during the recording process? Have we used the best stems/tracks? Did everyone (including me!) play the right notes?

When the mixing and mastering is done, it's final. Nothing can be changed. Is this good enough? Could it be better? Again, doubts, doubts, and more doubts.

But then, finally, the tune is ready to be released. Once you have your music submitted to the streaming platforms, there’s NO TURNING BACK 🫣 You HAVE to let go. And that's hard. Very hard. What if it’s not as good as you think it is? What if people think you’re a fraud?

Voilà, the disturbing mind of many creatives (or is it just me?). But hey, I’ll live.

The sun WILL go up tomorrow.
And I WILL be creating new stuff.
(And there WILL be doubts. Same same old same old)

But most important:

I WILL follow my passion to express myself in the best possible way I can.

Alright, I'm gonna be honest with you. SOMETHING NEW, the new single that’s coming out, is not a completely new song. The single from my debut album CONNECTED. It’s the only tune that’s never been released on its own, other than on CD (you know, a silver disc with music on it). So technically, the single is about five years old. But for all you youngsters who haven't had the pleasure of buying such shiny phenomena (you still can, tho! Years ago, the photo was taken by Anne Vogel. While writing this post, I found out I used that same picture for my single CLEAN SLATE, my fourth single. 🤯 Quite embarrassing. That’s what happens when your head is full of distracting thoughts. Luckily, I made a few adjustments before I sent it to CD Baby, my distributor. It has some little differences compared to the other single. So it's not completely the same cover. Come to think of it, it might be not that regrettable the art covers look alike (it might even make sense) since SOMETHING NEW and CLEAN SLATE are linked to each other. But that’s for another time 😉

Anywayyyy, there’s nothing I can do about it anymore, so the only thing I CAN do is let it go. So I will. Great lesson for me. No one’s gonna die or be hurt, right?So let it gooooo.

I had a really interesting conversation a while ago with a music marketing guy… He basically told me that I was a dinosaur on the brink of extinction in Music Land. “These days, why bother spending tons of money on hiring a recording studio while you’ve got a home studio at your disposal?”, he said. “Everyone does it like that these days.”

First off, I’m not “everyone”. Besides, the music I create can’t be done in a home recording studio in my humble opinion. At least not for the quality I like to achieve. I need the sounds of real drums. I need the energy of real horns. I need the beauty of a real grand piano and Fender Rhodes. I need everything REAL. Period.

What d’you think? Should I get ready to be extinct?

Yesterday I revealed the song title of my upcoming single. For the first time, you were able to listen to a small snippet of the tune. If you did, you wouldn’t be surprised to find out that I’m a funk lover, right? Some might say, I navigate through the Jazz-Funk-Soul realms. It’s all true.

It wasn't my intention to bother you this weekend, BUT… I am a bit (but happily!) surprised about all the sweet comments concerning my post on Tuesday that referred to my re-introduction on Facebook. Although it was meant to be a post to inform y’all about my new single that is coming up, many of you reacted to the ‘mental issues’ I referred to (which, to me, was just a little side note to explain my absence on Soc Med). Somehow, that info became more important than I had foreseen. Apparently, many of you can relate, for reasons you know the best yourself.
Some may think that my ‘issues’ have something to do with my music or ‘the industry’. However, that’s not the case (although it obviously has an impact on everything in my life, including my creativity). All I can say is: Thank you all for your concerns. I felt being seen. I am in good hands, and am being cared for. Enjoy your weekend! ❤️

Because I’m in the middle of a deep, soul-searching dive into the raging waters of my mind, I’m still wondering if I made the right choice to release a new single at this moment. Time will tell. The moment that I made the decision it felt good. That’s all that matters. Anxiety and fear of failure are for tomorrow, right? 😏

Hi there! I kinda fell off the social radar concerning my channel. It’s been a while since I was a regular due to mental issues. In case you’ve forgotten who I am, this might be a good time to introduce myself again.
Under my alter ego’s name d’Z (pronounced as “d’Zee”) I write, compose, and produce my original tunes. I mostly create vocal music based on the Jazz/Funk genre. Since I’m not a vocalist, I often collaborate with singers f/m. When recording my creations, I always play the drums (I’m a professional drummer), and I sometimes record some key tracks as well. The rest of the tracks are recorded by outstanding musicians. So there you have it. A little bit of me.

Oh boy. I’ve just decided to release a new single before the end of the year 😬

For those who missed yesterday’s live radio interview about the backstory of LOVIN’ & DANCIN’:

When the tune was almost entirely recorded, we still hadn't found a vocalist. Raoul Soentken, my co-producer, mentor, and sound engineer suggested Katie Leone, singer with Incognito at the time. I told him I’d never dare to ask her to sing my song. Ever. Raoul proposed to send her a message. Should she respond, “The rest is up to you, pal”, he said.

To my great surprise, Katie replied, saying she wanted to know more from me personally. So I wrote a message (which took me five hours to create 🥸) saying I would be honored if she would like to sing a tune of mine. I also told her I’d completely understand if she wouldn't be interested. The next thing I knew was that she wanted me to send her the unfinished, half-recorded version of LOVIN’ & DANCIN’. Imagine my surprise when she totally dug my song and would love to contribute 😳 I literally freaked out when reading her email! The rest is, so they say, history. When we received her vocal stems, we were totally blown away. What a powerhouse. Katie nailed it in every way, even better than we’d expected. I’m still very proud that she wanted to lend her voice to my project! Can’t think of anybody else who could have done the job. Thank you, Katie Leone❣️

This is a warning to all creatives.
Apparently, some folks try to steal from musicians. 😡 (especially from those who haven’t a huge following on the socials)

This is how it works:

Their first encounter is by DM (pic 1, 2 and 3). Then there is some kind of proposition to send a down payment. Now it gets interesting 🥸

As you can see in pic 4 there’s an ‘obstacle’. First, after giving my bank details, there seems an empathic attempt to solve the ‘problem’, ‘cause it’s all about trust, right?

Later on, it seems there’s only one solution: just cash the way too big check, and refund the overpaid money. “It’s no problem, really. I trust you so don’t worry, I just want you to get paid on time for all the hard work” etc etc. (pic 5)

I’m glad I didn't agree (although I created a great, cool li’l song for his ‘son’ after all, because, yeah, I trusted him... 🫥)

I found out that when I had agreed to (digitally) cash the money, chances would have been that I had received a (probably false) link that would have stated that I had received the money in my bank account, including the request to pay back the overpaid amount. Needless to say, there wouldn’t be any money added to my bank account...

Brilliant, right? And sick as well.

It seems I’m not the first musician to whom this has happened.
Although I feel conned, I feel grateful as well. Know why? Well first off, I’m glad I didn't ‘cash’ any money and do a refund. So no financial harm. Secondly, I showed myself I’m still able to write music and lyrics on the spot when needed, no matter what mental condition I’m in.
