After different versions at the Mucem (Marseille), the Bardo Museum (Tunis), the Musée national de l’histoire de l’immigration (Paris), The New York Public Library, Depo (Istanbul), and CerModern (Ankara), a photographic version of the exhibition Shared Sacred Sites - Lieux Saints Partagés is presented at the École française de Rome until January 19, 2023. "LUOGHI SACRI CONDIVISI. UN PELLEGRINAGGIO FOTOGRAFICO NEL MEDITERRANEO" is curated by the anthropologists Dionigi Albera and Manoël Pénicaud (CNRS, Idemec), both members of PILNET.
"How can a place be both holy and shared? It is often believed that a sanctuary can only be inhabited by one religion. This exclusivity seems even more demanding in the context of the three monotheisms. However, it is not uncommon for the faithful to temporarily cross religious boundaries to go and pray in the place of the other. Without any desire for conversion, they are in search of grace and will call upon common holy figures (Abraham, Mary, Saint George, the Seven Sleepers...). Beyond theological divergences and inter-religious conflicts, this photographic exhibition makes us (re)understand the phenomenon of the frequentation of the same sanctuaries by the faithful of different religions."
