In 2003, Saddam Hussein is captured by United States military forces during Operation Red Dawn. The operation was launched after intelligence was gained that showed two likely hideouts for Hussein. After searching both sites with no success, one soldier kicked a piece of flooring to the side, revealing a spider hole, in which Hussein crawled out and was disarmed. He offered virtually no resistance. Hussein participated in the 1968 Ba’ath Party Coup, and served as the totalitarian President of Iraq from 1979-2003. In September 1980, he led Iraqi military forces during an invasion of Iran, igniting a war that lasted until August 20, 1988. From August 1990 - February 1991, he invaded Kuwait in an effort to annex the country for oil fields, only to be met with the largest Allied resistance since World War II. In the wake of the Attacks of September 11, 2001, he was stated by US and British intelligence to be harboring weapons of mass destruction, and as a result, the Coalition Invasion of Iraq was launched on March 19, 2003. Following his capture, Hussein went on to be tried for crimes against humanity, in which he was found guilty, and executed on December 30, 2006.
