On August 15, 1971 (53 years ago), the US Dollar was "temporarily" restricted from being converted into gold and became a fiat currency (not backed by precious metal). The promise was that "your dollar would be worth just as much tomorrow as it is today". It was followed by the implement of a trade tax, intended "to ensure that American products are not at a disadvantage because of unfair exchange rates" and that "when the unfair treatment is ended, the import tax will end as well". Within the next 5 years, gold tripled in value, which means the American dollar lost 67% of it's value. Inflation then skyrocketed into new record highs for the next 2 years (double digit percentage increases on prices).

The American dollar is backed by nothing but belief, and inflation is the highest it's been since 1981 today. Whether or not converting to a fiat currency was the right move is for economists to debate, but those economists aren't YOU, your kids and resources are yours, and your choices are yours to make.
