Our Story
As a long-time employee of his family’s fireworks business, Andrew Barber grew a love for Chinese culture at an early age. On an annual trip to Liuyang, China in 2011, Andrew visited temples and witnessed the use of large, seemingly unscented incense as an offering to ancestors during worship.
But what if it smelled better by way of essential oils? Giant incense for outdoors. Aha - “Outcense”. Trademark was filed and so it began.
Outcense started in Andrew’s basement in Bonner Springs, KS - dipping wood pulp-covered bamboo in essential oils for hours with unpaid help from his closest friends.
Sale started with nearby festivals and small shops. Later, a spot at Kansas City’s City Market on Sundays. Today, you can buy Outcense online and from various retailers around the U.S.
